More 28 Days?

06.21.2004

Last summer audiences responded in a big way to Danny Boyle's apocalyptic zombie flick 28 DAYS LATER and helped make it the sleeper hit of the summer (though I was underwhelmed...). Not surprisingly, Fox Searchlight, the studio behind the original film, is putting together a sequel titled 28 WEEKS LATER. The plot of a sequel of such a name seems pretty easy to ascertain as it would follow the heroes from the first film (or perhaps a new set?) dealing with the prolonged aftermath of the virus that turned the vast majority of England into rage-filled zombies. Danny Boyle would likely return as producer but the studio is reportedly looking at Rowan Joffe (son of Oscar nominated director Roland Joffe) to direct. Cillian Murphy is off filming a role in Christopher Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS and could be convinced to return but so far the studio hasn't thought about cast options just yet. I could go off on a rant about how horror sequels are all the rage (pun intended) these days and how you can't make a horror film that's even marginally successful without a sequel being released (ANACONDA 2?!), but I won't. I'll just say that I expected 28 DAYS to be one of those few films that managed to escape that cliche. Oh well, at least they're not calling it 29 DAYS LATER...
