The Walking Dead casts a former star of The Wire as Tyreese

Nov. 20, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Just a few days ago, we presented the rumor that a new character would be introduced on the Fall finale of THE WALKING DEAD on December 9th, and it looks like now we may have a clearer idea of who that will be.

Former cast-member of THE WIRE Chad Coleman has been cast as fan favorite Tyreese. Coleman played Cutty on THE WIRE and has also appeared on series such as THE GOOD WIFE and IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA. He bears a great physical resemblance to the comic version of the character so I have no issue with this casting choice.

Here is a brief recap of Tyreese from the comic: Former athlete and father to Julie, Tyreese is one of the strongest men to join the group of survivors. Tyreese, Julie, and her boyfriend, Chris, joined Rick's group shortly after they began their journey away from Atlanta. A one-time pro football player in the late 1990s, he is much like Rick in many ways: strong, a devastatingly effective melee fighter (managing to kill more than ten zombies by himself, in one instance), a stern but loving father, and a generally sensible person. A terrible shot, and recognized for it, his signature weapon was a hammer. Shortly after joining the group he began a relationship with Carol, but shifted to Michonne after several fights and arguments with Carol and Rick over physical actions/mistakes.

Obviously the show has differed from the comic greatly, but the overall arc remains the same. The upcoming showdown between Rick's group and The Governor's group is bound to be the finale for the season and Tyrese is vital to that plot. Plus, he can now jump into the Daryl/Carol relationship and shake things up.

What do you think of the casting news?

They purposely left Tyreese out of the show cause they wanted to have Shane be in his place for some of the up coming events at the prison. But then they decide to off Shane instead of keeping him around (back tracking on his characters proposed arc) and are now bring in Tyreese at a point where in the comics he's already dead?!

Its the Resident Evil movies all over again. They start with something based loosely based on the source then instead of running with it they decide to just try to

Just so many things wrong with this show. Shane surviving the first season, characters being completely different or omitted entirely (Andrea/Carol and Tyreese and co./most of Hershels family respectively), events that never happen taking up several episodes (looking for Sophia), killing off Shane in a bull shit cop out cause they never should have kept his character around in the first place, the way Lori is killed off, the list goes on.

Now the first season, if it had been a copy of the fist book, would have been only 3 episodes max so i can see how they do need to add little things here and there like Daryl and his bother Merle for some extra dynamic and story but beyond that this show has become so bloated with bull shit that no installments of previously perceived needless characters (in their opinion) is going to fix that.

Tyreese wasn't dead at this point in the comics. And obviously they've been switching things up with the show. Don't know about the whole "Shane taking Tyreese's spot" plans. And this couldn't be farther from Resident Evil. There's no super powered Milla Jovovovovich and a dozen cosplayers.

@moose1132

The comparison to resident evil has to do with the changing of the source in the first installment (RE1 which is similar to WD season 1) only to jam a bunch of crap from the source in later installments (Re2-5 which is similar to what is happening in WD seasons 2 and onward). It has nothing to do with drawing comparisons between the 2 stories characters, which i have never done so i don't know where you are getting that from.

And actually yes Tyreese would be dead in the Finale

And actually yes Tyreese would be dead in the Finale if they followed the comic cause the Gov' cuts his head off with Machone's sword. All be it its a later bit in the over all fight that this happens and not right at the beginning but effectively in the show they are now going to introduce this character at the same time that he dies in the comics. Bunch of bull shit nonsense when they weren't going to have him there anyways with their changes.

And while i can't recall exactly where i read it but one of the reasons Shane is not killed off in the first season, like in the comcis, is cause they were going to replace Tyreese with him to make things like Rick's mental breaking down and having to cope with his wife being preggo (and Shane being the father) at the prison more interesting.

I was basically being sarcastic with the RE stuff. And I'm not totally convinced the mid-season finale or whatever it is in a couple weeks is going to be the end of the prison arc so we'll see on that one. Either way, I won't mind seeing different things done with Tyreese.

Spot on choice

Loved him in the Wire and will fit the role real good. Happy to hear Tyrese is going to feature, i thought they would just skip over him since much of the timeline of his story (at least comic book wise) has already been done.

That's cool. His character is awesome in the comics and he has quite a few clashes with one of the main cast in the comics. I just don't understand why everyone from the comics looks basically the same but the Governor they cast totally different. Here's hoping that they really bring out his evilness soon or else the Governor will be a fluke on this show.

They originally offered the part of the Governor to John Hawkes

I'm not happy with the way The Governor is being portrayed on the show. I thought he was suppose to be one mean son of a bitch. I'm not seeing that at all.

I agree, not only does he not look like him, but he also doesn't act like him either. He's just a liar on the show, with no real threat. He better it with the villianry soon, or it'll be a waste...
