Eight actors in contention for the lead role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Nov. 28, 2012by: Alex Maidy

With shooting scheduled to start in just about six months, James Gunn and Marvel are looking for their leading man for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Deadline reports that five actors have signed test deals with Disney for the role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

Those actors are Joel Edgerton (ZERO DARK THIRTY), Jack Huston (BOARDWALK EMPIRE), Jim Sturgess (CLOUD ATLAS), Lee Pace(THE HOBBIT), and Eddie Redmayne (LES MISERABLES). The article also mentions other potential candidates who did not sign test deals. That short list includes James Marsden (X-MEN), Garrett Hedlund (TRON: LEGACY), and Sullivan Stapleton (GANGSTER SQUAD).

Peter Quill, in the comics, is born to a human mother and alien father and eventually becomes a NASA astronaut. During a mission to a space station, Quill is offered the job of Star-Lord (the Marvel equivalent of the Green Lantern Corps) by an alien entity called the Master of the Sun. He eventually becomes the leader of the group we know as the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

Quill will be a vital role to cast since he will be the sole human member of the team and the connection for the audience to the bizarre team of heroes. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is the riskiest film Marvel has attempted so far. Audiences didn't really connect with GREEN LANTERN despite the appeal of Ryan Reynolds. This will be a tough sell, but I have faith in James Gunn.

What do you think of the potential candidates to lead the Guardians? My favorite is Edgerton as he seems to have the most screen presence of this group. Lee Pace is an actor I have liked since his days on PUSHING DAISIES but I am not sure he is right for this. Jack Huston rocks on BOARDWALK EMPIRE and would be my dark horse choice.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is slated to open on August 1, 2014.

nathan fillion's turn?

aw man, when nathan fillion said he had no interest in playing Ant Man, i was hoping it was because he was shooting for Star Lord. I dont know much about guardians of the galaxy, but i could see him as the leader of a mis-mash group of galactic heroes.

I'd definitely go w/ Huston and would be ok w/ Edgerton or possibly Pace. Just can't picture Sturgess in the part. Redwayne couldn't possibly look any more like a wuss.

Edgerton is a good choice. The rest are decent to meh. Certainly capable, but not as inspired as past Marvel casting decisions.

Garrett Hedlund!

This is awesome, Hedlund has been my first choice since about a week after this project was announced. He should already have some familiarity with the target audience because of Tron Legacy, and izzy2024 is right, he really is pretty fantastic in On The Road. He's primed for a breakout role and hopefully this will be it.

Out of them my pick would be Lee Pace, but I think Joel Edgerton stands the best chance because he's enjoyed a lot of hype in the past year and Marvel was really pursuing him for Dr. Strange at one point.

Oh, and Mr. Maidy, while Star-Lord does bear some passing similarities to Green Lantern, the true Marvel anologue would be the Nova.

Garrett Hedlund

Come on Marvel, you duped him for Captain America, if Chris Evans didn't knock the character out the ball park BOTH times he played him, I'd be much more upset. Hedlund would be great, For the love of God, cast him!

Well I know nothing about the source material so he could be way wrong but I just finished "On the Road" and was absolutely blown away by Garrett Hedlund (a sentence I never thought I would write). So he's my vote. Then Edgerton, then Huston. And for the love of god, not Eddie fucking Redmayne.

All solid choices. And I really like Jim Sturgess, I'm surprised he has yet to really break out. Unsure who would be my top choice however, maybe Sturgess.

would be so happy

if Jack Huston got it. Richard fucking Harrow! Would love to see him get a big role like this (and a big paycheck!)

next choice would be the criminally underrated Jim Sturgess, such a talent that guy. Then Edgerton.
