Details have been released on Michael Bay's top secret film, Almanac

Nov. 29, 2012by: Niki Stephens

Biff would be pissed, actually, Marty might be too.

In October, it was revealed that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes would be developing a top secret film titled, ALMANAC. The only details that revolved around the film had to do with Jonathan Liebesman‘s cousin Dean Israelite getting this project as his directorial debut, and Andrew Stark and Jason Pagan getting the job as scribes. Now Bleeding Cool has a close friend with information on the plot...and it has a little to do with a film you may already know/love:

The lead character, David, is a smart kid in high school but he’s finding dating hard. He’s drawn to Jessie, the typical popular girl, and decides that he’ll try to attract her by winning the science fair, and the college scholarship that will net him. Bless.

David’s late father was a scientist and so he looks through his Dad’s stuff for ideas – and he finds two things of note. One gives him the ability to time travel… and the other is a sports almanac. Anybody who has seen Back to the Future 2 can guess where this is headed.

Two more of David’s friends travel back through time with him to abuse the almanac. Timelines get messed with, we learn more about David’s Dad’s research and there’s apparently a couple of pretty big twists… one of which I was able to guess, in fact.

The film is said to be much like CHRONICLE when it comes to the found footage aspect. The source also states that the success of the film will come down to the casting choices.

Certainly sounds like they've wholesale lifted story elements from Back To The Future II and hoped nobody would notice, but maybe that's the point - could be one of those films that acknowledges the existence of another film (so it's set in the 'real world' where Back To The Future exists as a movie) and the characters try out Biff's plan, hopefully only to discover it doesn't go as planned.

I know people on this site LOVE to hate on Michael Bay, but I'm not gonna bash the idea just cause he's involved. It seems the saying there's nothing new under the sun is true. It definitely has a feeling of Back To The Future as well as other films, but I'll pass judgement when I hear or see more.

Ignoring for a moment the blatant rip-off angle, but what sort of time-travel is it that would allow for found-footage? It doesn't make any sense to me. Zombies makes sense, super-heroes makes sense, exorcisms and astronauts make sense, but not time travel.
