The new Harry Osborn will be played by...

Dec. 3, 2012by: Alex Maidy

We already knew the shortlist for possible actors in the running to play Harry Osborn in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and now we know who the lucky guy is. From the group of actors featuring many new faces, CHRONICLE star Dane DeHaan as landed the role.

Previously portrayed by James Franco in all three of the Sam Raimi films, Harry Osborn will be integral to the rebooted Spider-man universe. Seeing as Oscorp was central to Peter Parker's investigation of his father's past in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, it seemed natural that Harry would appear in the sequel. Harry starts as Peter's friend in the comics and prior films before their relationship begins to unravel as both men explore their hidden identities.

According to director Marc Webb, "Dane is an exciting and extraordinary young actor and he is a fantastic addition to our cast".

DeHaan was fantastic in CHRONICLE which also explored what can happen if superpowers drive you to the dark side. If you haven't seen CHRONICLE yet, I implore you to check it out. DeHaan embodies a slighter frame than Franco but does seem to be more physically on par with Andrew Garfield. I think this is a great choice that keeps the Marc Webb series firmly in the high school years.

DeHaan has had some big roles in the last few years including LAWLESS, LINCOLN, and the upcoming PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, DEVIL'S KNOT, and KILL YOUR DARLINGS. I remember seeing him in the HBO series IN TREATMENT where he played a pathological teenager. Talk about acting chops.

He will join Garfield, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, and potentially Jamie Foxx when THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN begins production next year. The movie is slated for release on May 2, 2014.

A brilliant choice

Dane DeHaan has been amazing in everything I've seen him in, from True Blood to Chronicle to Lincoln. I hope he makes the most of this.

I think he'd do a good job, although I could do without Harry's character at all in the sequel.

I guess the only major (non-villain) character from Raimi's films to re-cast would be J. Jonah Jameson. Or maybe they won't even try since JK Simmons owned that role, no one else could come close.

I'm one of the few who HATED 'The Amazing Spider-man'. While Andrew Garfield was good, the movie itself was just all over the place. Some parts were an exact rehash of Raimi's 'Spider-Man', while other parts tried to be different just for the sake of doing so. It never found a proper middle-ground between the two to be it's own thing. However, with that said, I loved 'Chronicle' especially Dane DeHaan's performance. His involvement makes me interested in this.

Sidenote: As far as Electro, I

Sidenote: As far as Electro, I assume they'll go with something closer to the Ultimate version of the character who was created by Justin Hammer (Sam Rockweel in Iron Man 2). I know it will never happen, but this would be a perfect opportunity for Sony to work out something with Marvel and try to make this part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity.

If there's Harry Osborn, I'm more interested who'd play Norman Osborn.

I've heard rumors it's going to be Steven Weber. Whether or not that's just "fanboy" guessing because he voices Osborn on one of the cartoons, I don't know. But it was from a decently reliable site.

That sounds interesting. But I don't think anyone can top Willem Dafoe's Norman Osborn. He played that role to perfection.

At least they are consistant?

This kid made the Chronicle movie unbearable for me. All he did was complain and whine. Let me guess, he is going to whine, bitch and moan the whole way through this movie too. I guess this kid is here to counteract Peter Parker's need to cry every 10 minutes. Why are people embracing this need to have characters that are so emo they need to cry, literally, over spilled milk.

Why are they even making a sequel? Ya they'll make money I guess but don't they care that the first one didn't exactly wow anyone?

All they're responding to is a) does it make money and b) does it fit in with the agendas.

Hollywood isn't just dying it's suicidal.

I must, respectfully, disagree. I actually preferred the remake to the originals as I found the Raimi ones corny/cheesy and silly (not just the third one, but 1 and 2 as well).

Additionally, Amazing Spider-man did get good reviews (73% on RT), not as good as the Raimi ones, but certainly not bad. The chief criticism being that we've already seen the origin story.
With the origin out of the way, there is no reason to suspect this movie won't be good and go to unexplored areas - in fact, it

So, maybe I am in the minority, but I look forward to these new installments. Or at the very least I'm willing to give them a chance, unlike many.

You mean show business is in the business of turning a profit? No, you're right. As Killing Them Softly showed this past weekend the real money is in critically acclaimed passion projects. Wait, whats that? It didn't make jack shit? No one went to see it? At all? But Spider-Man made a jillion dollars? Huh. Blows up my whole perception. I was with you, and now I just don't know anymore.

If you want to make money there are easier ways than movie production, guy who thinks sarcasm is witty.

Profit is one thing but when its the sole governing aspect of every decision you get...Twilight 6. Do you LOVE the Twilight series? You do? You curl up in a pile of the books every night with your *whatever the leads name is* plush doll cradled between your legs humming the theme song? No? Well what about The Hunger Games? You love that too? No?

Would you as a person who is in a movie

Would you as a person who is in a movie fan site like to see something worth watching to people other than the stunted or full blown retarded? Then stfu and understand what I read instead of just reacting to it with nonsensical attempts at being witty.

First respondent: you're the first person I've encountered who thought Amazing Spiderman was great. If it was only good then why expect the sequel to be ...amazing? It seems like they should either let it go for a bit or reboot the whole thing yet again. Though to be honest if there was never another comic book adaptation on screen I'd be fine with that.

This is a fine choice, as he was great in Chronicle. This makes me a little more excited for ASM2.

He was the worst part of Chronicle. He was nothing but a whining asshat and it dragged down that movie as the same behavior dragged down amazing spiderman from peter parker crying every 10 minutes.

I'm happy to see this because like most of you, I loved Chronicle.

However i can't help but feel bad for the other actors on the shortlist. I wasn't rooting for any of them because they havent been in major movies, i dont know who they are. I havent seen what they could do. As far as i know they could be just as talented as Dehaan. Anyway, so is the tale of Hollywood.
