Guess what Marvel did to Peter Parker in the newest issue of The Amazing Spider-man comic?

Dec. 26, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Issue 700 of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN comic hit shelves today and fans of the webslinger are in for a doozy of a plot switch. For those of you who are comic fans or wish to remain spoiler free, I would stop reading now. You have been warned. Last chance to turn back before I reveal the big event in the comic book. Alright, here we go.

For those of you who are current on your Spider-man, there was an event in the latest story arc that caused Peter Parker and Doctor Octopus to switch minds. That's right: Doc Ock is now Peter Parker and Peter is Doc Ock. While the old body switch is one of the oldest tricks in the book, there was a finite time frame on this one. With Doc Ock knowing he was going to die, he stole his nemesis' super-powered body and held onto it long enough to see his enemy die.

That's right. Peter Parker is dead. And we are not talking an alternate timeline. This is the main continuity of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

A very bold move for the comic that will now be re-branded as THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. But how can Doc Ock be a hero? In the final moments of the comic, Peter is able to force his empathy into Octavius, which means that even though he is a bad guy, Doc Ock will now become a hero. But, the road will not be an easy one.

Writer Dan Slott says "This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good."

Editor Stephen Wacker says this will produce an interesting first year for THE SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN: "We want to do Spider-Man by way of Batman — a little creepier and darker. Doc behaving in a manner he's not accustomed to. We see a more sympathetic side of Doctor Octopus. We couldn't have a Spider-Man who was running around murdering people. And I have no interest in seeing that sort of character win."

This is definitely a unique twist to the story. They essentially have found a way to completely change Peter Parker without removing Peter from the equation. While nothing is permanent in the world of comics, this is certainly a fresh way of rebooting a series. Who knows, maybe someday the body switch would work as a plot for a big screen SPIDER-MAN, albeit not in a permanent way.

What do you think of this shocking twist?

They are really trying to kill off its fanbase eh?

So its Peter Parker's body, but its Doc Ocks mind... That is the worst idea for a heros death ever. They already failed with the Puerto-Rican spiderman and now this. Marvel hates its characters and hates its fans. This is obviously a cash grab as Peter will come back 5 comics later but still, its a bad idea and Marvel probably lost a lot of subscribers.

Didnt Morbieus kill Spidey a few years back then they gave Spidey mandibles that shot out his wrists, after he came back from the dead. Its just a money grab. Parker will be back at some point. But this story sounds terrible. I dont think Spidey has had an original story since McFarlane gave us Venom, which was around issue 300 which I am proud to actually own.

Good Show

i know this may piss off a lot of comics fans but... massive kudos to Dan Slott for having the balls to plan this out and follow through even when knowing what the blowback would be. More Marvel writers could take notice of this and take some chances with their story telling, cause like has already been mentioned... if they screw the pooch too badly they will just reset the world and start again.

Which is exactly why the change is meaningless. If it doesn't sell it will be retcon'd and Peter will be back thus destroying any idea of pusishing the envelope or going against the satus quo.

Why does Spider-Man get the shittiest storylines?

Between this and that horrific Retardus-Ex-Machina that was Parker literally resetting all of Marvel continuity just to preserve his damn identity to keep his 7000 year old aunt from dying, I don't understand why anybody bothers reading this crap anymore.

Peter Parker gets shit on so much, might as well give his body to a villain. Chances are, they wrote this with the mindset that he would comeback and have to try and clean up his image. I feel like this is going to be similar to the black suite line where Spiderman was corrupted and had to fix all the fuck ups. I don't see anyway that this is a permanent switch, thats just dumb.

My sense is that it'll be like that terrible spate after Bruce Wayne was paralyzed by Bane and that random idiot took over in order to make the series "darker". They're going to have to bring the real Parker back just to fix the mess the *writers* made, let alone Doc Ock.

I think Disney needs to get some seasoned people from the comic industry to take over some of these editor and chief creative officer positions. The boys club at Marvel has been screwing fans & characters over the past 12 years and if Disney wants the characters to mean anything in the long run, they need to kick Joe Q's boys club to the curb.

This is stupid

Spider-Man is Peter Parker and no one else. If you're tired of the character, stop writing stories about him and make Doctor Octopus a hero but don't pull a switch like that. And who wants a darker Spider-Man? There's so many dark and gritty heroes out there (most of them not nearly as popular as Spidey), why did you have to remove the one that isn't.

meh

"That's right. Peter Parker is dead. And we are not talking an alternate timeline. This is the main continuity of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN."

It makes no differnece anymore. This will last the year then there will be some other way to put it back. Spidey's come back from the dead before, he can do it again.

Won't matter a bit

in two years when the next Spiderman movie is released - Marvel will reverse this twist and put Peter back in his body - heck - they already have not one but two built-in back doors to get themselves out of this story. So it won't matter a bit. In the meantime - it gets fans angry enough to buy it and talk about a character who is almost as old as dirt.

Return of the Clone Saga

Seriously, comics are scratching the bottom of the barrel these last few years. I can understand certain obstacles about keeping a character interesting after so many years but there's also a quality that is lacking in the creativity department in both DC and Marvel as of late. Shitty idea, up there with bringing back Jason Todd and the Spider baby. There's a reason why a lot of us stopped paying for this shit years ago, it isn't worth it. Quality has gone down big time, and the editors are all

Pfffff what a simplistic teenage idiot made this one up?!!!

I havent read them in a while, stopped 5 years ago, i was a big fan but just lost interest because they made up things that didnt make sense to me anymore and were becoming boring.

The best parts for me were everything with venom and carnage, and the whole clone saga, which had me at the edge of my seat, although i really liked the drawings from todd mcfarlane and john romita, they made spiderman look really cool.

Good...

Its nice to see the comic industry climb out tof the stale box they've been in. My favorite series to date is marvels "Dark Reign". How many "re-imaginings" and "reboots" do we have to see?? I say cool, gimme something new. Fanboys are gonna cry but change can be cool sometimes. As long as its done well!

Intriguing.

Not sure why people always throw out the accusatory "stunt" card anytime a game changing story is developed. This wasn't a last minute decision. There were building blocks for this as far back as issue #600.

Sometimes I wish people would just sit back and enjoy the story and realize that while yes Peter will eventually be Peter again, this is just a story inside decades of mythology. Also, while continuity is fun and builds chronological history, it can be a road block to interesting

Not sure how long you have been reading comics, but if you cannot see this for the obvious poorly thought out, short sighted, money grab stunt it is, go read US Weekly instead of comics.

I'm an on-again, off-again reader. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me so much. Comics are a momentary escape from real life and that's how they suit me. Maybe your claim is that it is a poor story or maybe you haven't even read it, but you can keep your cynicism and your US Weekly for someone else.

Another bad idea from the frat boy club. I really hope Disney steps up and get's rid of the people pushing these stupid idea's and soiling the characters.

It won't last

This is a bull crap stunt by Marvel to dig into the lead that DC has since the 52 relaunch. It won't stick around. By the time the next Spider-Man movie is releasing trailers, Peter will be back. Marvel cares more about the movies than the comics now.

Weird

I haven't read it, haven't read Spidey in a long time, but it sounds to me (from how this article was written) that Peter IS gone. Just because his body isn't doesn't mean he's not gone.

This is weird. Just... Weird. It's like when Lost plate with our minds about

SPOILER ALERT*****

John Locke. He was dead but they used his body. That wasn't Locke. This isn't Peter.

What a mind f*ck

It is only a matter of time before Pete comes back. These type of stunts happen every decade or so. I wouldn't hold my breath, but I would start taking bets on when old webhead comes back.
