Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest actor rumored for the Guardians of the Galaxy lead

Jan. 2, 2013by: Alex Maidy

More and more names keep adding to the list for the lead role in Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The newest addition is THE DARK KNIGHT RISES star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Deadline is reporting JGL is in the mix for the lead but does not confirm if he has been offerred the role or is just another name thrown in the hat. So far that brings the list of candidates to 10: Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, Zachary Levi, Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, and Sullivan Stapleton.

All are vying for the role of Peter Quill, a NASA astronaut offered the job of Star-Lord (the Marvel equivalent of the Green Lantern Corps) by an alien entity called the Master of the Sun. He eventually becomes the leader of the group we know as the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

Of that group, two others have experience with the superhero genre aside from Gordon-Levitt: Zachary Levi (THOR: THE DARK WORLD), James Marsden (X-MEN). Gordon-Levitt is one of the strongest contenders of the group in terms of acting ability, but it is still hard to say if he would be the best fit. I still like Jack Huston for the role but I am leaning towards Zachary Levi as well. But, does appearing in other superhero movies make it hard to get a role like this? It certainly didn't affect Chris Evans.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is set to film later this year for a release on August 1, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather see Joseph Gordon-Levitt appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY or JUSTICE LEAGUE?

Rocket Raccoon

I could almost care less about the casting of the lead at this point. Reading all of their names together like that just makes it all seem so generic. I'm much more interested about what might be done with the other characters, especially Rocket Raccoon! I have not read any of the source material, but on looks alone I'm excited to see how they go about creating him, who they get to voice, etc...

Does anyone with more knowledge of the character have any ideas or hopes for a certain actor to

I hope he gets the role. He is one of my favorite actors of all time and would be great to headline.

If not him, I still like Edgerton, Huston, Pace, or Marsden.

I'm down for that, makes DC have to cast someone else as Batman/Bruce Wayne and brings someone people know to a franchise that may need a familiar face to put asses in seats.

I can dig it.

I think that would be a pretty good pick.

No please

He is already in a comic book property. And despite the overhype about him, he is not that good.

Fuck that. I like the actor, but let's not try and fit a square peg into a round hole. Still a better idea though than making him Batman.

Chris Evans

I don't think Chris Evans should count in the discussion of actors playing multiple superhero roles and here is why: the Fantastic Four films don't exist in the same cinematic universe as Captain America or the Avengers. Marvel Studios/Disney does not have the rights to that franchise, as it is owned by Fox. Therefore, Steve Rogers was never at risk of encountering Jonny Storm. Besides, Fantastic Four was a failed film franchise. The movies were awful and Fox is now trying to reboot it with

Besides, Fantastic Four was a failed film franchise. The movies were awful and Fox is now trying to reboot it with new actors to fill these roles. Chris Evans was one of the few good things about those movies, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to cast him in a major role within their own cinematic universe that exists separate from Fox's failed attempts.

Same goes for James Marsden. He also appeared in a movie that cannot coexist with the Avengers universe Marvel created because Fox owns the rights to that property. If Marvel wants to cast him, there will be no conflict. These two examples, however, do not compare to the casting of Zachary Levi in dual roles, because his character actually exists in the Marvel universe, with his appearance in Thor. However, in Thor, he is playing a part that replaces another actor, so I'm starting to question if it really matters.

I'd rather see him do Guardians, because I don't think a tie in to TDK trilogy would be any good for the Justice League. You either get Bruce Wayne as Batman or don't do it at all.

I have to agree with you. I think that this would be a good property for him to be attached to. I think that if they try a different character as Batman then they will fail because most movie going people know Bruce Wayne as Batman and will be confused if another character is playing him.
