A Good Day To Die Hard will be rated...

Jan. 12, 2013by: Paul Shirey

...R!!

No, I'm not f*cking with you.  We have it from a very credible source that A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD will be returning to the franchise's roots and take on the blood-spattered, curse-laden goodness that once was the DIE HARD brand with an R-rating.  That's right, no more Yippie-Ki-Yay, motherBLAM!

Yeah, it sounds almost too good to be true and there isn't a blow-by-blow explanation for why just yet, but the prospects of seeing John McClane in all his proper R-rated glory gives me a few goosepimples.  I know that some enjoyed LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD for what it was, and that's fine, but for many it was a  decent action flick, but not really of the DIE HARD mold, especially with the toned down violence and naughty words.

Granted, A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD still has that cool-but-not-die-hard vibe going, but I've slowly come around to the film, even with my skepticism of director John Moore and the Russian setting.  Bruce Willis' co-star, Jai Courtney proved that he's got some good onscreen energy in JACK REACHER, enough that I was sold on the idea of him as McClane's son.  It may seem silly to get excited over a rating, but many of us have been hoping Fox would come around and recognize the brand they're working with. For whatever reason, they seem to be doing just that.

Expect an official announcement very soon, but for now you can rest easy and up the odds in favor of a kick ass entry into the DIE HARD universe.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, rated-R, will be released on February 14, 2013 (just about a month away!)

Extra Tidbit: So, what do you think? Does this change your perspective on the film or do you still feel the same?

It's nice to see this is R after all, but either way, I will be seeing this. I think I'm one of the only people I know that actually enjoyed Live Free, and if this is anything like that or the previous Die Hards, I'll enjoy it. Bruce as McClane is always a good time.

actually, im not concerned about the rating the movie gets or not, granted, this type of movie always benefits from a good old R rating, but im a DH hardcore fan, so i just want it to get here fast :P

I miss the idea of John McClane being a regular cop in extraordinary situations. After the last film, he might as well be fighting bad guys in the Matrix. i'm not sure if the rating is enough to make me see it.

Yeah, I'm sure it will be SOOO much better that way. If I like this one, it'll be the first DH sequel I consider worthy to the first.

Post conversion r rating?

Added cgi blood, swearing and instead of yippikayee motherrussia its motherfucker.
Otherwise they would have reasured the fans a lot sooner by saying its their intention to shoot this one with an r rating in mind.

Or they did the same thing Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters did and cut two different versions of the movie, the original R version and a watered down PG-13 version and then tested them with multiple audiences to see which did better. In that case (and likely this one) it was the R rated version that got a better response, thus the final rating.

Yay!!!!!

Oh happy day, now I can hear the John McClane I fell in love with! This is the best news of 2013 so far:)
An R rating doesn't mean the movie will be grand,it only means it will have the real McClane flavor. I enjoyed "Live Free Or Die Hard" but I will only watch the unrated McClane version.

So?

It doesn't mean anything. I am concerned whether or not the film is good, not what the rating is. I couldn't tell you what most movies ratings are. heh

Ya but will it still be a Die Hard movie, but ya the R rating is a huge deal. To be honest I did enjoy Live Free or Die Hard though, it just wasn't the McClane we all love Plus I have always believed it didn't even have an R rated type plot & would have felt forced. . SO ya like most are saying, this the real Die Hard 4.

Good on the rating...

Now, most importantly, is the STORY going to be good?
(No matter the rating, if the story sucks...the movie will suck).

I'm more excited about the gratuitous violence that comes with the R rating than the swearing. I don't miss the f-bombs nearly as much as the brutal violence.

This is cool and all, but why do they suddenly have the balls to do it now when they could have made the last one rated R too?

I think its because in the mid to late 2000s hollywood bought in to the mindset that PG13 was the way to go financially. But after the disappointments of Terminator 4, Total Recall, etc and the successes of the Expendables, Prometheus, etc. they may have become more open minded to the R rating, Also, I've seen that over the long run, adult oriented movies tend to bring in more money than popcorn flicks that are intended to bring in a big box office return for one weekend. For example, Im sure

Maybe it's just me but the plot of Live Free did not even have that R rated vibe in the first place & would have felt forced.

Forget the rating. This movie looks like the same sort of cartoony bullshit as the Resident Evil movies. For fuck's sake. This is dollar bin garbage.

John McClains constant F-bombs and his hilarious use of bad language makes up 75% of what I love about his character.

This site's constant emphasis on whether a movie is rated-R or not is ridiculous. Like an R-rating makes a bad movie better. Celebrating a movie getting an R rating is pointless.

A rating can determine a movie's entertainment value to many people. How many times do you not watch a movie when it's on cable because all the "good stuff" is cut out? It's the same concept when a studio decides to edit a movie down to a rating.

I just prefer an action star who's kicking someone's ass to kingdom come to say "And here's another shot to your head, you fuckin' asshole!" instead of "And here's another shot to your head, you friggin' goofball!". Generally provides these types of films with more credibility is all. To this day, I still can't watch GOODFELLAS on TV when it's censored. Just doesn't sound authentic. We're not saying an R-rating makes a movie "better", but certainly more credible in many instances.

You must be forgetting that the title for the second one was Die Hard 2: Die Harder, which is much worse than A Good Day to Die Hard.

Thus this will become the official fourth installment.
I hope it opens with McClane gasping awake and remarking, "Wow, what a weird dream, had everything, hackers, Kevin Smith and a sidekick of questionable sexuality"

Yippee ki yay, master fapper.

I'm glad to hear that people in Hollywood still have balls. The only problem is that it's released on Valentine's Day, which will hurt it's receipts, but the R rating will be blamed for lower ticket sales.

DH4 unrated version sucked

It is a step in the right direction bu to be honest, that doesn't change my expectations one bit. The unrated version of DH4 was even worse and if they'll do that again, throw some off-screen f-bombs just to pander to the audience and have some blood added in post because some exec finally read that the fans want blood, it is going to be insulting to a R-rated movie fan.

What this announcement does change is where I am going to see the movie. Now I know I'll definitely be supporting it in

My fiancee and I were pretty much on board with the trailer until that helicopter/falling through the glass bit.

It looks like that moment will be this entries "Dragging down a fighter plane with your bare hands scene" (although saying that Die Hard with a Vengeance also had the "surfing on a truck in a flood" scene, and 2 had the "Eject from plane that's exploding" scene, so maybe it's an unfair judgement)
