Disney is trying to bring Drew Struzan out of retirement to create posters for Star Wars: Episode VII

Jan. 21, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Do you remember the old days when movie posters were works of art and not Photoshop monstrosities? ah, memories. One of the great poster artists of all time is Drew Struzan. Even if you don't know the name, you would recognize his iconic posters for STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, and HARRY POTTER films, to name a few.

Struzan announced his retirement back in 2008, but has still produced pieces of art here and there. With the recent announcement of the new STAR WARS trilogy over at Disney, it remained to be seen whether they would be forging a new direction for the franchise or if they were going to hold true to the series' roots. It looks like Disney doesn't want to take any chances and will be classing it up by trying to get Struzan to produce the posters for the new films, starting with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII.

Struzan said he has already been contacted and has not ruled a return out: "If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible."

While many complain that the prequel trilogy was not worthy of the STAR WARS franchise, the posters are still works of art. It should be a no-brainer for Disney to pay Struzan whatever it takes to produce three more gorgeous one-sheets. It won't feel like classic STAR WARS without him.

The guy deserves his retirement, but I'm never going to say I wouldn't want to see new Struzan Star Wars posters. He's a legend.

Great sign for the non believers

Still unsure that Disney holds SW in high regard? Disney will do all they can to keep SW fans and the value of their investment at a premium, those facts alone should put you at rest.

I would love a Drew Struzan poster for Star Wars VII. I'm really glad that they got him back to do the posters for the prequels, when Photoshopped-posters were becoming the norm. Like many, I do miss the heyday of lovingly hand-crafted movie posters and you're right on in saying "it won't feel like classic Star Wars without him".

BRAVO

A good poster will never make a good film, but it is definitely a good start. Bravo Disney, you better start building this kind of confidence in your "little" project.

I'd love to see Struzan back in the saddle again. Nevertheless, if he says no, Alex Ross isn't a bad choice either.

Yes Please. Movie posters these days are so bland. Even if he can't return, the posters should still be in this style.

YES PLEASE

It might give ideas to other studios to go back to REAL MOVIE POSTERS !
(One can hope, right?!)
But he said that the last poster of the STAR WARS prelogy was NOT really his, but more a mix of different propositions et draw, assembled without his approval... If I remember correctly his book...

as long as he makes them versions that accompanied the original films in the theaters I am all for it, but not the later ones pictured above meant to tie all the films together.

I'm sure Disney could sway him to return, but if it doesn't work out, Travis Charest would be an interesting choice to do poster work. Amazing artist with a heavy Struzan influence.
