Dwayne Johnson may produce and star in a movie based on a napkin drawing

Jan. 22, 2013by: Alex Maidy

It goes to show, you really don't need to have much more than a Starbucks napkin and a pen to get a movie made in Hollywood. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that based on an image drawn on a napkin along with a mock motivational poster online has gotten the greenlight as a potential franchise at New Line Cinema with the producing team behind JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and megastar Dwayne Johnson.

The image, seen above, was drawn by Alex Panagopoulos and was then captioned “Teddy Bears: Protecting innocent children from monsters under the bed since 1902." This was enough to warrant buying the rights to the picture. The film, tentatively titled TEDDY BEAR, has no plot details, but it seems a dead giveaway that it will be a mix of MONSTERS INC and TOY STORY. Dwayne Johnson may star in the film which makes me wonder if it will be live action due to the massive success of Seth MacFarlane's TED.

Either way, this could be awesome or another forgettable family flick from Johnson (see TOOTH FAIRY and THE GAME PLAN). In the end, Johnson is a very likeable actor who does well in action movies. Depending on how they spin this project, it could be a disaster.

What do you think? Good idea or is Hollywood scraping the bottom of the barrel?

Extra Tidbit: I am headed to the store to buy a shitload of napkins.

Ever hear of a comic named "The Stuff of Legend''? Same thing, but I know the book is better than any Dwayne Johnson movie that could be made.

Personal disappointment...

I literally have dated pages on a script I was working on after I saw this photo a year or so ago. Filled a book with ideas and story outline and put it aside with hopes that one day I could get my movie made with a decent budget. It was a full animation, not same as Ted. But oh well... what can you do... thats what happens when you leave things to late I guess. I hope this turns out to be a good flick, the picture is great and with a good enough script would work fantastic. :)

Well, "Safety Not Guaranteed" was based on a Classifieds ad, so there have been stranger jumping-off points for films - and that apparently turned out rather well (haven't seen it yet) - though I don't see anything about napkins in this and the Hollywood Reporter story. This could be a fun family adventure flick if done right - I'd love to see a montage of the teddy bears' crusade "since 1902", and perhaps some backstory as to how the bears were entrusted with their mission. And maybe a Justice

Where are you even getting that napkin business from? Did you just make that up to make the headline more interesting?

I saw this image online quite some time ago and thought it'd make a fun movie.

On top of just the idea of a napkin picture getting a movie greenlit (makes me think I should really relocate to L.A.), the "Protecting innocent children from monsters under the bed since 1902" tag reminds me of the "Rare Exports Inc." "Est. 1739". If this is anything like that or Monsters Inc., then it could be a really special movie. Or not.

Written on a napkin? So is that why The Rock's movie career sucks?

"Teddy Bear". They really strive for the most generic movie titles possible these days.
