Untouchables prequel?

07.01.2004

We all get our fair share of sequels nowadays, some of them even worth the time and money (X2, SPIDER-MAN 2). What about prequels though? Other than the STAR WARS debacle, nobody seems to really get their panties in a bunch over trying to extend a storyline the hard way. EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING will give it a go later this year, I guess BATMAN BEGINS falls into this category as did INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM and DUMB AND DUMBERER. I guess it's just easier to disassociate a film that takes place before the original if it blows donkey balls. The latest prequel talk is for a long-time favorite film of mine. THE UNTOUCHABLES has some of the greatest characters to ever grace the screen. Kevin Costner is solid as Eliot Ness, Andy Garcia defines cool as Agent Stone, and Robert De Niro and Sean Connery are at the top of their game as Al Capone and Jim Malone respectively. It seems Capone is going to be the main focus for TRAINING DAY director, Antoine Fuqua,  as he looks to tell the story of what happened in the years before Ness and his boys took him down. Early indications are that Fuqua wants Sean Penn to headline. And hey, if it sucks - who cares. We already know how the story ends.
