Cool Videos: Christian Bale calls 8-year-old boy with Leukemia to talk Batman

Jan. 30, 2013by: Paul Shirey

I toiled with posting this, but it's already made the rounds in many venues, and ultimately I felt if it was something I was happy to see, then it would likely be the same for you.  Christian Bale, who has shown both a heated temper and sympathetic resolve, has once again proven his integrity, heart, and good nature by chatting on the phone with an 8-year-old boy named Zach, who is a huge Batman fan and is currently battling Leukemia.  Video of the phone call was put on Zach's YouTube channel, where you can also see the strong-willed boy open up a bunch of Batman gifts sent to him by THE DARK KNIGHT RISES star.

We are constantly reminded of the ugly things in life with the hits coming at a rapid-fire rate, but it's always heartwarming and invigoratiing to be reminded that not only do good people do good things, but also good people we look up to.  Bale doesn't broadcast any of his kind deeds and I find that to be a humbling attribute of the actor.  I share it only because of my deep respect for him and to give a shout out to young Zach, a movie geek in the making.  As a father, movie nerd, and all-around purveyor of good will, seeing a member of the film community use their fame as something more than pushing a political agenda or cause-of-the-week turns me into a sappy mess.

You'll have to crank up the audio a bit to hear Bale talking to Zack.  Check out the video of Zach opening his Batman swag from Bale afterwards to give you the one-two punch of hope and sadness all in one.

Stop by and like Zach's Facebook page and send him some well wishes if you so desire.  I'm sure every bit of support helps.  As for Bale, when he isn't paying his respects to those in need of a boost, he's busy making more movies, including the upcoming OUT OF THE FURNACE, Terrance Malicks KNIGHT OF CUPS, and David O. Russell's next project, tentatively titled AMERICAN BULLSHIT.

Extra Tidbit: I know there quite a few celebrities that contribute in ways like this, but rarely do we see or hear about it. Much respect, Bale.

Yep, publicity stunts like this totally make us forget about Bale getting arrested for beating his mom, or being abusive to coworkers. Bale's a great guy. Wonder what publicity stunt his agent will come up with next?

I believe Bale went to the police voluntarily to give his side of the story and no charges were filed due to it being instigated by his mother and sister (both he has bad relationships with). In regards to being abusive to coworkers, when is yelling at someone for doing a big "no no" on set considered abusive? Just like negative reviews for no good reason, this was clearly written by someone trying to get attention. Move along people.

I bet you think RDJ is aces, or probably have no issues listening to snoop, or enjoyed Tysons cameo's...

and as far as Bale goes, im sure you never once yelled at someone before co worker, friend, or any one.. and Im sure you know better then the police investigation as to why no charges were laid against Bale.

Not only that, im sure you visit cancer patients all the time, or fly them and their families out to Disney for a week to hang with you. None of which were on the news, or done

and if you do all these things, then its safe to say you are perfect sir.

But its cool to point fingers, and judge them.. especially when you have no idea what happens in their lives. Good on you, class act all the way.

Bale, you make us proud.

After hearing Bale speak at award ceremonies, and a side from the fact that he's taking the time to talk to this boy, I love the fact that Bale is not speaking in his thick english dialect. He did so many big and little things to make this boy happier.
Thank you Bale, you stay classy.

You go Bale-man, and I hope Zach gets better soon. In the "Batmobile" documentary on the Dark Knight Rises blu-ray, there's a bit where the Tumbler Batmobile is taken up to a children's hospital and all the kids come out and are so thrilled...that part brought a tear to my eye.

Oh yeah! I love that part. All of Batmobiles came up at the children hospital. Even if I'm not a kid anymore I'd be thrilled too.

I'm glad that Mr. Bale keeps doing this kind of good deed in low profile. Doing good doesn't need to be seen others. Good job, Mr. Bale.

That's an amazing gesture. I remember how happy I was when I was a kid and I got a regular letter from Michael Jordan. He got extra gifts and he got to talk with his hero. It would probably not seem all that much to us but I'm certain it means the world to that kid and that's what matters. Very classy and heart-warming video, especially for a Bat-fan such as myself.

I always liked Christian Bale since American Psycho, but now I love him even more For all the naysayers who accuse his recent actions as a means to drum up publicity, pleas note he visited those people un-announced, without any media people present. And he seems to genuinely enjoy his time with the kid : )

And he also went to visit victims of the Aurora theater shooting last Summer. No TV cameras, no publicists, just showed up at the hospital to meet people and bring a few laughs.

There's portraying Batman, and then there's being Batman. At least today, Bale was being the latter.

I'm glad Bale is using his influence and energy to out and do some genuine good, especially for kids. There's enough bad shit in the world, but when an innocent little kid is terminaly ill, that's when I can't make sense of anything. I for one really appreciate Bale's efforts to do a little good for Gotham :)

I bet you won't hear about this on the news because it's not creating tension or showing a celebrity in a bad light. Shameful of the media to keep filling the younger generation's head with images of Snookie, Nicki Minaj, Honey Boo Boo and Pregnant Teenagers when instead they could be showing stories like this, of people doing good things.
