Director Marc Webb teases that Dane Dehaan may not be the villain you think he is in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Feb. 7, 2013by: Paul Shirey

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 just kicked off production a few days ago and director Marc Webb is not looking to let us forget it.  The director has been tweeting a pic a day since the start and yesterday saw a picture of a metallic locker with the number 14 on it.  For those who are familiar with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, a similar metallic locker discovered by Peter Parker and Eddie Brock housed the original symbiote invention created by Peter's parents to cure cancer, which eventually bonded to Brock and became...you guessed it...Venom.

Webb included the hashtag "happy birthday" in his tweet, but did not specify to whom.  However, the folks at Crave Online, who originally made this connection, found that February 6th, the day the tweet was sent, is actually the birthday of Dane Dehaan, who is cast as Harry Osborn in the sequel.  Posting that along the pic could mean many things; misdirection, unrelated accident, or, well, that Dane Dehaan is Venom.

That would certainly be going in another direction, and an interesting one at that.  I was more than underwhelmed by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which leaves me little to lose with the sequel.  However, since we're (hopefully) done with the tired origin business, perhaps we'll get to see ol' Spidey throw down with some serious villains this time out, instead of that Geicko Lizard in the last one.

Whatever the case, I'm much more intrigued with this sequel than I was with the original.  Fingers crossed that Webb and co. can really bring something new this time out.  And, personally speaking, I'd be totally down with Dehaan taking on the snarl-toothed Venom, even if it happens in the end credits.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jaimie Foxx, Dane Dehaan, Colm Feore, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Paul Giamatti, and Shailene Woodley is set to swing into theaters on May 2, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: What do you think, guys? Too many villains? Just right? I'm betting on a build-up to a Sinister Six showdown.

Venom is a big dude, why can't they get an actor who would work for the role or is already a large men.

Not a locker door...

That looks like a door to a morgue slab cooler door to me... not a locker at all.
Too many villains and based on an ultimate story arc... based on a picture of a morgue slab cooler door that 'kind-of' resembles a picture of a locker door from an ultimates comic... fanboys sure are quick to hate something they know nothing about

In the new cartoon Harry Osborn is actually bonded with the symbiote and it never was eddie brock, however this cartoon is terrible. So its not entirely unfounded that this might happen.

Honestly, I'm not an Ultimate Spiderman fan at all, and I hate the Ultimate-version Venom (which is perhaps the most unimaginative take on Venom). Showing that locker just makes me sick at my stomach. They shouldn't have called this reboot Amazing Spider-Man, they should have called it Ultimate Spider-Man because that is what it is. It isn't the REAL Spider-Man, its that other thing Marvel did.

Really? Venom?

"Fingers crossed that Webb and co. can really bring something new this time out."

Bring something new? And yet - we're talking about recycling characters from the last trilogy and rehashing plots from the Ultimate comic that was in fact a reinvention of the original comic….. that would be the opposite of new….

So last time they recycled the characters origin in an attempt to reinvent the wheel, and now they're going to reinvent Venom since the audience just couldn't get enough of him

(sarcasm) Venom has always been a great visual character but two dimensional at best. And there are so many other characters we've yet to see. I'm sorry this sounds like a a pretty weak idea.

Movie is going to suck anyways, might as well ruin Venom a second time.

I don't think it matters. I mean the movie is going to suck even worse than the first one. They are making trilogy mistakes on the second movie already by adding too much too soon. Too many villains, horrible script, horrible director and the bastardization of Venom once again, are reasons why the movie will suck balls.

Having never read the comics I'll ask this. Was the way they showed the symbiote in the third film with Tobey Maguire correct? Did the symbiote come from space? This would completely deviate from that if it was. Also, Harry Osborn as Venom? Is that accurate to the comics? If it's not, then your gonna piss off every person who ever read the comics!! I just hope they don't throw away the Venom character like they did in the third film!! He deserves to be the main villain!! I also don't wanna see

The new series of movies is more based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, in which the Venom symbiote was created by Peter Parker's dad and Eddie Brock's dad, as opposed to the original extraterrestrial origin from the main comics that Sam Raimi used.

I'm hip to everything they are doing with this film, I see most people hated the first and cry for Tobey and Raimi but I can say I only enjoyed Spider-Man 2 and even that film was ridiculous with Peter temporaily losing his powers which I hated. The only good thing the original trilogy had going was J Jonah Jameson, the suit, and Doc Ock. I hope this film or new trilogy does try and bring Venom because I know they'll do that character justice whether it's Harry or Eddie with the symbiote.

None taken. I tend not to have the same taste as most people who use this site. But that's what makes these strike backs so great.

Also, as far as misdirection goes... that Giamatti as the Rhino thing stinks... my $$ is on Giamatti as J Jonah.

Dane DeHaan gets the green

he's an excellent actor who deserves the roles he has coming his way. Whatever they decide to do with him, he'll knock the role out of the park.

The way they focused on Peter's parents and want to go more with the "Ultimate" comics route makes perfect sense for this... assuming he's not Harry Osborne because that would just be confusing. It's interesting because in the plot outline they put out like yesterday, they described Dehaan's character as "an old returning friend" of Peter's; which is exactly what Eddie Brock was in the Ultimate comics. I'm not saying toss Venom in there this time around, but set it up in the next one. It would

Take the time to build it up and not make the same mistakes Spidey 3 did with the character.

The new movie better keep up the pace. I mean, The Amazing Spider-Man's running time is about two hours something but the only exciting big is in the final part of third act.

So he's not Harry Osborne now? I'm confused.

I feel like this movie is going to have TOO MANY things going on throughout the movie and that it will just all be one big clusterfuck. I mean Electro and Rhino are already confirmed for the villians, you don't need Venom (if that is the case) too.

Honestly

I hope this it true if it is done correctly. Venom is my favorite comic villain/anti-hero so while I was extremely excited for Spider-man 3 I was also a little disappointed. Hopefully this is a setup to the third installment or if it is the focus then maybe the villain angle will be less clutter and more cameo. For instance, Rhino may be hard to pull off as a main villain but as a distraction for Spider-man to deal with (almost like a chase scene) it could work better. Similarly with Electro. I

I have read many complaints about the character not being big enough or well known enough of a villain so maybe his involvement is similar, like an angry scientist out for revenge. This series is obviously from the Ultimate storyline which has some pretty vast differences from the original. If everyone is mad about this now just wait until the Green Goblin shows up without his glider (as in his Ultimates persona) which I may add is not my favorite incarnation.

I tried to like this but...

It's all just repackaged horseshit with a twist. Yeah some different villains, a bit different angle, a "darker" tone, but its just not vibing.

Lets not forget Peter is the first to wear the symbiote. If it was about Peter wearing the Venom symbiote for the whole movie with a venom cliffhanger (which was the original rumor for Spiderman 3), that would make more sense. And if the story was about Peter struggling with the symbiote than than might be why they are settling on villains that have historically been more pulpy than interesting.

The entire reason for this reboot was for Venom. Sony wanted a Venom franchise, this was reported back before Spider-Man 3. Part 3 fucked things up for that, so they rebooted Spider-Man to get their franchise. I promise you, after Venom shows up in an Amazing Spiderman movie, we will get a Venom spin off movie.

They did this in the ultimate spiderman cartoon recently...it worked but there was a lot of build up and I really don't think its going to work this time around...especially when you've already got Rhino and electro in the mix.
