MOVIE POLL: Should the Die Hard franchise continue?

Feb. 14, 2013by:

Should the Die Hard franchise continue?

No. The best one is in the can. There's nowhere left to go but down. The franchise is done.
Yes. There's still life in ol' McClane, especially with his new superpowers.
Meh. Whatever. I'll probably see it if they do, but don't really care anymore.

I contemplated the No option but...

Let's be honest, if done correctly there's till a good Die Hard movie to be made somewhere down the line. Do I believe it's going to happen? Hell no, but theoretically it could happen. They just need to tone down the scenario, maybe get it back to just one building. Die Hard 2 was a copy of the first movie, but it was still fucking awesome, so why couldn't this be the example? Make it a HARD R, make McClane feel vulnerable again, bring back the beloved characters from the franchise and make it

i agree with GUY. my thoughts exactly. this new Die Hard was just plain awful. what's next? John McClane fixes his relationship with his niece and nephew?? this movie was just too big. the next Die Hard should def. be smaller, more intimate. enough fast paced sequences, quick edits, and shaky camera work. either way, i'm a die hard Die Hard fan. (see what i did there? you corny!)

I'd say go for it. However, return Die Hard to its original type of setting - a confined space, i.e. high-rise building, an abandon warehouse, etc.. Somewhere that he can chase the bad guys around.

My idea. Having yet to see Die Hard 5, is to go smaller, and personal.

Go back to a small action thriller movie. More about the tenseness present in the first few films, with that high stakes, against the clock pressure, but with very little on the massive CGI explosions.

McClane's surprise retirement party set up for him by his daughter (he probably gatecrashes it in true McClane 'gun at the ready' style, hearing noises in his own house before realising it's a surprise party), re-establish all characters at said party from previous entries EXCEPT Holly who
Go back to a small action thriller movie. More about the tenseness present in the first few films, with that high stakes, against the clock pressure, but with very little on the massive CGI explosions.

McClane's surprise retirement party set up for him by his daughter (he probably gatecrashes it in true McClane 'gun at the ready' style, hearing noises in his own house before realising it's a surprise party), re-establish all characters at said party from previous entries EXCEPT Holly who wouldn't attend (so that's Lucy McClane probably dating Matt Farrell, Jack McClane, Zeus, Al, perhaps a few extras). After said party everyone's gone home, he's asked Lucy to call him when she gets back (obviously he's over-protective of her, as he was in DH4), he doesn't get the call and so calls her, but again no answer. He heads round to find a house full of bad guys, big ol' firefight there, that McClane ends up LOSING, only to be captured by one of them who is the now grown son of either of the Gruber brothers.
This Gruber can explain to John that he's on a mission of revenge, with no outcome other than the utter torture of John (no robberies, no end of world schemes) and that he has kidnapped any friend of John's that helped him defeat his father/Uncle (that would be Zeus/Powell) as well as members of his family, and that he has X amount of time to save them from whatever destinations the Gruber tell him over the radio. No cops or they just execute everyone.

This way we can have a smaller scale, personal Die Hard movie. Bring together all established cast for the last hurrah, continue the Die Hard family theme, have McClane on his own for some of it going back to sneaking around smaller locales looking for the hostages (friends/family). People could legitimately die to up the stakes if McClane gets somewhere too late or doesn't do something correctly (Powell/Zeus/Farrell could all be emotional deaths), a small team up with his son during one of the fetch quests before leaving people in his son's care (his son being the only legitimate defense they might have whilst John's running around). There could be quite a few good car chases, fight scenes, last second timed explosions, etc as John races to save friends and family.

At the end, when all are saved (or dead) we reveal that the reason Holly wasn't at the party was because she'd been kidnapped right at the start of the night, and that she's being held hostage at her place of work (Nakatomi, though with that being in LA and John living in NYC it could be difficult, unless John's in LA for the whole movie having the party at Powell's house or something, failing that it could be any other NY high rise). The film ending with McClane captured, shot and beaten to shit, Holly covered in blood, both with hands tied, Gruber threatening to toss them both off the top of the building for some poetic justice, and John, in a last move of desperation running head first into the Gruber, being shot in the process and shoulder tackling him off the roof of the building.

Whether he survives the movies or not depends on whatever, chances are the studio/Willis would want him to and we can follow over the roof afterwards to find the rope tying his hands have caught on something on the way over. If the idea is to kill McClane off then the retirement party can be very much a "You have nothing left to give the world" kind of affair. This being his one last chance to make his life count, to save his family, his one last chance to be a hero as without that, without risking his life to save people, then what is he? He goes back to a dull retired boring life of nothingness and McClane is defined by his "hero cop" status, this one last sacrifice being the only way he could ever go out. Though I can't see Fox/Willis wanting that ending at all and would probably be content with the insinuation of his death and the reveal of him still alive.

So yea, I have given this way too much thought.

Here's a casting idea: Michael Fassbender as the son of Simon Gruber. He'll, he's even half German.

Perfect casting choice. Essentially it'd need a great up and coming young British actor putting on a German accent.

My second vote would go to Tom Hiddleston, I think it's far enough away from Loki to be considered a different part altogether.

I don't feel like Die Hard is totally done. Hopefully we will see the series rebound similar to what happened to the X-Men series and Planet of the Apes. Have McTiernan return or Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) take over. My idea for the plot is a maximum security prison takeover. John McClane is at the prison to see the execution of a dangerous criminal. Said criminal slips away and stages a coup. That actually is a good idea. And I agree about Gareth, he would make a great director for the series since he knows how direct action. They just need to replace the scriptwriter as that is one of the reasons why this new Die Hard fails so much.

That is a damn fine idea. And, the truth of the matter is, the ONLY way to get back to McClane and the Die Hard mythos is to make it personal and claustrophobic. Focus on McClane and where he is in his personal life and then put him in a position that he never set out to be in in the first place, unleash hell, work out some demons, overcome the odds, die motherfucking hard. And earn that R. The R-rating in DH5 is complete bullshit. You'll never feel it. DH4 was more hardcore and that was

Everyone in this thread has posted better ideas for the franchise than the people they paid to make this last one. Proof positive that the fans know the franchise better than those in charge of it.

Willis seems to live in straight to dvdville the last few years. Not sure if he needs a new agent or someone to tell him to quit making shit and hold out for quality projects. Looper was a sleeper hit for him, but other than that he hasn't starred in a big time hit in a long time.

Please yes!!!

I love the character john maclane, it shouldnt end like this,
I really dont understand why Willis accepts how things are going, look at Tom cruise for example, he always chooses quality directors or the ones in wich he has the fate will make a solid movie.
Willis doesnt seem to care, he only shows up and does what he has to do but you would think he wants more influence then that.
Willis next time: Choose a good director(mctiernan)
Let someone write a good solid

And please take the time(no rush) to do these things.

Like someone else said, that olympus fallen movie looks more die hard then the last die hard. I dont think that will be a good movie either but it could be molded into a die hard.

Come on

"..With a Vengeance." Was the last Die Hard movie in my opinion. It featured the still recognizable character of John McClane. The rest are just rehash action movies starring Bruce Willis using the Die Hard name to make a couple bucks. The last one had his daughter, this one has his son and maybe the next can star his nephew... Dwayne Johson!

Saw Die Hard 5 this afternoon and enjoyed it more than Die Hard 4.

I would like to see one more and have it come full circle. Bring back the Gruber family somehow, bring back his wife and kids, and have Samuel L Jackson co-star in someway.

I'd be down to see another Die Hard as long as they learn from this new one. One miss out of five (and no, Live Free was NOT a miss in this series) is not bad. As long as Willis is still down for it, why not. However, he has to bring everything he's got and not cop out to some CGI. I'd say Willis has probably one more in him and I'd be willing to see it if it's good.

Pigeon Holed Option, Man

I want to add a new option for real fans of the franchise...Where is the damn "Want to see the franchise move forward if it is handled with care." Joblo the only pro more Die Hard option you gave us was painted in a negative light. I do want to see more of Bruce Willis laying a beat down as John McClane but not as a super hero as a powder keg of a human who just wont give up.

haven't watch Die Hard 5 yet...

but here's my idea for Die Hard 6:

The movie starts with John McClane waking up. he realizes that Die Hard 4 and 5 were just dreams (hence he had superpowers). He's really still just a lonely-ass NY cop with no love from his wife and kids. after the events of die hard 1 - 3, he's had a subconscious lust for adventure the past 20 years but nothing fulfilled him in real life. so he goes a little crazy. he inserts himself into some grand FBI sting operation at a drug lord/terrorist mansion

McTiernan has a one year sentence? I'd say wait for for him and return McClane is to roots, don't team him up with a side kick, and let him fight his way out, "Only The Good Die Hard" has a good ring to it!

Won't happen nor should it. McTiernan was convicted of spying on people he worked with on a film. His career is over.

I would love to see one final movie. But if it happens they should bring back Renny Harlin to direct. He truly knows how to direct great actions movies. They also need someone to write a great script. That will be the biggest challenge. Maybe it would be good to bring back Steven E. de Souza. That is just my opinion though.

DoB, Funny you choose two of his lamer movies when talking about him. You can do the same thing to any director whether they are great or not. Stop playing the games.

Love the Die Hard series but

when the latest installment is neck and neck on the RT meter with a Nicholas Sparks movie, it might be time to call it a Good Day to End Die Hard.

Not Sure

If they keep going in the direction they have been (making John McClane a superhero with an inflated ego to match) then they should end the series. But, if they get back to the root of the story (wrong, place, wrong time, him alone versus the bad guys just wanting to survive) then they could revive this franchise.
