Eastwood & Spielberg?

07.09.2004

Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg will collaborate for the second time on the drama FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, based on the novel by James Bradley and Ron Powers. Clint would direct the project, from a script by Paul Haggis, with Spielberg producing. The last time the pair worked together in this capacity it was another adaptation - THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY. FLAGS seems to me to be like a cross between BIG FISH and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and follows a young man in present day who learns of his father's role in raising the flag at Iwo Jima during the 2nd World War and begins to piece together his life during the war and his participation in that historic event. Spielberg has had a hand in a number of WWII projects including the aforementiond PRIVATE RYAN, as well as SCHINDLER'S LIST, HBO's "Band of Brothers" and less notably the John Belushi comedy 1941. Eastwood was nominated for an Oscar for his last turn as director on MYSTIC RIVER. He's currently filming the boxing drama ROPE BURNS (formerly MILLION DOLLAR BABY) with Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank.
