Hanks is Red Elvis

07.09.2004

DreamWorks has acquired the rights to the life story of Dean Reed, an actor and singer with a great deal of international popularity that was never matched in the US. Tom Hanks will star in and produce the project. Hanks has been interested in the life of Reed, nicknamed Red Elvis because of his popularity in Germany where he eventually took up residence, and flew out to Berlin to meet Reed's widow. Reed was an American-born singer who released a few singles for Capitol Records that never caught on stateside but proved to be a big hit in South America. After touring that country and spending time in Argentina his outspoken leftist political views got him booted from that country. While in Europe his negative views of America's involvement in the Vietnam War and nuclear testing got him in hot water with the US State Department, who kept a large file on him. Reed died mysteriously in 1986 and the cause of death was never determined. Hanks has a number of projects in the works including A COLD CASE with director Mark Romanek. His next film, THE POLAR EXPRESS, opens this November.
