MOVIE POLL: What did you think of Evil Dead?

Apr. 7, 2013by: Dave Davis

What did you think of Evil Dead?

It rocked! Satisfyingly scary and gruesome.
Not bad, but the original still rules.
Never seen the original, but I thought this one was okay.
Bah. All bloodshed, no substance.
Skipped it.
No Bruce Campbell, no Evil Dead!

Very good

I thought it was great. This didn't freak me out as much as the original, but I thought it was just as entertaining. Some of the dialog didn't work. It reminded me that Diablo Cody was involved, and took me out of the movie a bit. Also, I think the red band trailer did spoil a bit too much, so it didn't have the impact it could've. That said, there were some great freaky moments, and the practical effects were amazing. I hope this helps convince studios that practical effects look

Looking forward to the unrated version on DVD.

Glad to be part of the majority

it totally rocked beyond all my expectations. I went in knowing I'd be entertained, but had no idea to the extent the film would amaze/impress me. Fantastic cast, it was great to have some fresh blood injected into this most beloved series. They were all great and I'm sure the filmmakers had as much fun torturing them as Raimi and brood enjoyed torturing Campbell and the rest in the originals. I absolutely loved it. Such a disappointment on so many levels

I wanted sooo badly to love this movie, hell even to just enjoy it on a pure entertainment level but I just couldn't. There were just many things wrong with the film that I couldn't get past. First off this is NOT Evil Dead. No reason this should have been a remake. I'm not just talking about the story and characters being different( that's actually one of the reasons I was excited for it). The rules and the actions of the demons were just so completely against the other films. The scariest
The scariest part about the demons in the others was the fact that they were all around you and there was no escape for anyone. Anyone in those films could be taken and possessed but here we get the lame transferred by bodily fluids explanation. It totally killed the suspense of who was next because we knew who would be next. The demons in this were just not scary at all. They were killed waaay too easily (compared to the others) and were not threatening at all. I loved how the demons in the originals toyed with Ash and the others. They could have killed them at any moment yet they wanted to torment them and really mess with their heads. There was none of that in this film, right from the start the demons are looking to kill and it gets boring quick. Also hated the vulgar things the demons were saying. The originals were never about those cheap shocks. The demons in the original talking innocently and using memories from the possessed was truly horrifying. The lines said by the demons here were pretty much rehashes of the Exorcist. (I mean she basically says "Your mother sucks dicks in hell" at one point). The exchanged between Ash and his girlfriend and the daughter and Henretta are still more shocking than in the remake and they don't have to resort to vulgarity. I feel these changes completely take away what was so special and terrifying about the originals. Besides seeing the Book of the Dead (not nearly used enough) I really couldn't tell this was Evil Dead. Hell in parts it looked like it could have been The Ring 3.

The flaws above are purely from the stand point of a fan of the series, these next set are just complaints on the film in general. The characters in this were incredibly bland and underdeveloped. Yes I realize this is a horror movie but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any development in characters. They set up a very interesting and potentially powerful storyline with Mia's drug addiction. I didn't want this to be just a step by step remake so I was excited when i heard this plot. I thought it was a great refreshing angle to take in a horror film. Putting in the estranged friends and brother only added to the intriguing stew they had cooking. Unfortunately they completely dropped the ball on this aspect of the film. The drug addiction ended up playing such a small part in the overall story. They could have done much more with her withdrawal symptoms. Such as toyingwith the audience more whether this was in her head or not. There could have been some very creepy and effective stuff done with that approach. Instead everything happens so fast that we never get a chance to connect with Mia which makes the last act of the film feel disconnected. None of the characters are given anything interesting to do. It also doesn't help that all of the actors were incredibly boring (not sure if its because of them or the director?) I honestly didn't connect with any of them which is a huge problem in a horror film were you are suppose to feel for them. Ash doesn't get much set up in the other films (especially 2) but Bruce Campbell draws us in with his performance and makes us care about him. I'm not saying the characters in here should have acted like Ash because they shouldn't, it wouldn't fit the done, but none of them were engaging. This brings me to the director. I was really rooting for the guy despite never seeing any of his stuff. I was looking for a refreshing vision and maybe someone who could match the manic energy of Raimi. I feel he fell well below my expectations. Besides the terrible performances I felt he never really injected energy into the camera. The parts inbetween the gore were so slow and boring that the film screeched to a halt. Once Raimi's films started going they never let up. After those films were done you felt just as exhausted as Ash looked. Even his attempts at doing "Raimi-vision" fell short.

One of the only good things about the film was the gore. I loved the use of mostly practical gore effects. They looked great and once the gore started it got gruesome. This however is also somewhat of a downfall. I felt the film thought GORE was scarier than HORROR. There was no suspense or build up to the kills instead the director just cranked it up to 11 and went nuts. Even then most of the awesomely gorey parts ended too soon. This may sound contradictory but I just feel that gore without any horror build up is just jerking off. The Raimi films were never as gorey as people remember. Sure there is a ton of blood in 2 but rewatch the arm cutting scene they barely show anything! The reason it is so effective is because of the subtle horror moments building up to that and the fact that we CARE about Ash. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS Speaking of Ash I felt that end credits scene was a complete slap in the face to fans. I loved hearing the original recording from part 2 over the credits put once the scene played I had such a nasty taste in my mouth. After all of their denial they are going to give us such a lame scene that has no context what so ever. I would have prefered that he never showed instead of getting that half assed ending.

Sorry for the length of this comment but I felt I really needed to express my view of why I feel this movie failed. I was genuinely excited for this film and wanted very much to love it but I ended up feeling very MEH towards it.

Gore for the sake of gore doesn't make for epic horror. Fear is what makes horror memorable. This movie had no fear factor whatsoever.

I completely agree with you man. The gore in this film came out of no where with absolutely no tension built up. Yes it was shocking and gruesome and cool but was it scary? Not at all because I didn't care about the characters nor did I feel any tension. Such a let down

well then stay away... I loved it.... having it be a remake means that the true scares and "FEAR" as you call it will be extra difficult to pull over past an audience that is going to see a movie called EVIL DEAD... I have never thought of EVIL DEAD being about true fear or scares... it's about Demons and demon possession and it's a remake so it relies on blood guts and gore...

Loved it. Despite all the scares and gore, it was a line of dialog that caused a man sitting next to us to walk out. Something about "little sisters" and "hell" and "rape"...

I loved it!

I'm not an "Evil Dead" purist. I didn't see the original until my late teens/early twenties, so the original's "camp" factor always outweighed it's "horror" factor. With that being said, I didn't go into this movie expecting anything and was pleasantly surprised about how well the film worked for me. (I loved the practical effects!!) I thought it was a fun time at the theater and will be buying this when it comes out on DVD. The best advice I can give anyone who hasn't seen it yet is to

It was fantastic.

Let's start by saying, I love the Evil Dead series as well as Bruce Campbell. This new take on The Evil Dead was very well done. It didn't try to go blow for blow with the original. Evil Dead threw nods to the original, while doing a great job at keeping it's originality. I didn't mind that they used heroine as the McGuffin for these characters to be together. It worked just fine. The characters were developed enough to drive the story. There was solid acting and solid violence. Loved the

And really people, with all of the other crappy attempts at remakes out there, this is definitely in the top of the bunch. People out there cast this movie out without really giving it a chance. "No Bruce Campbell, No Evil Dead." I said this as well when I first heard about it. But Fede Alvarez changed my views. He did a great job and I was very impressed overall.

I loved the practical effects. the tounge slicing scene was horrific... It took me a while to figure out that it was a guy using his two fingers disguised as a human tongue inside a puppet head... which is a PERFECT use of practical effects.
But how was the Machete slices done? when it goes across her knee and legs.. that appeared very real and VERY well done.

I found it entertaining, but didn't find it scary nor did I jump once.
Spoiler:
Didn't like that it was about a heroine and was like every other horror movie where a girl comes out on top. Do something different.

they used MIA because they werent re-creating ASH from the original... in the remake you really do not know who will live and who will die... I didnt mind MIA being the sole survivor because I was expecting David or that other guy to survive and they threw me a curveball.

This movie will change your life.

My brother and I went to a 10 pm showing. Right when the scene finished with the teacher getting attacked with a syringe a guy got up and took a few steps then fainted right there in the theater. Two of his friends literally picked him up and carried him out of the theater. This movie in my opinion is the number 1 horror movie of all time.

Its hard to make a good horror film

I know it's no original, it wont leave the same impact on audiences or the genre as Sam Raimi's film did. But it was still a relatively good film. Whats with all the downvotes for anyone who liked it. There are dozens of horror films every year and most are bad or forgettable, this will actually last in the list of worth-while remakes.

It was worth the price of admission

The movie would have been GREAT had the final act not dragged it down. The whole thing was so excellent up until then, that when it began I knew I would be let down because there is always something that gets in the way of a perfect horror movie. I will definitely be adding this to the old collection when it comes out on Blu-ray.

The original was so different in tone that I can't really compare the two films. I'm more of a serious horror type, so I guess this one was more my cup of tea. Cabin In The Woods this is not. No complex story line, no shifts in tone, just straight up dark, gory malevolence.

Did not like it

I thought Jane Levy was fantastic. She seemed to be having a great time playing the possessed Mia. Outside of her performance, I thought the movie was very boring even though blood was thrown around like it was going out of style. There wasn't an suspense. The blonde girl was a very underwritten and underperformed role. The couple next to me commented how they forgot that she was in the movie.

All blood shed?
Please tell me more how the original was a non violent film :D

I loved this. It was exactly what I wanted, expected, and was hoping for. It had great violence, a good story, comical, with references and nods. It had a chainsaw, and the word "Cunt". It had good characters, all the way from the guy who knows what is going on that no one listens to, to the guy who is fucking blind as a bat. A horror film that mocks other films.

@Thedude1989,

What substance did the original Evil Dead have, exactly? I love the original movie, but let's be honest, it had paper thin characters, weak dialogue, shaky acting (even from Campbell at that point), and a horror plot that only makes sense if you don't think about it. Like the remake, the original was "all bloodshed, no substance." It was an entertaining film, but don't make it out to be something it's not.

You are correct H-Man. The original didn't have substance either. I don't care for any of the Evil Dead movies that much however if I had to choose this awful remake(in my opinion) and the original Evil Dead I'm going with the original every time.

Havnt seen it yet...

I loved the original trilogy and this one looks awesome. I honestly can't wait to see it and I'm not usually a fan of horror remakes. I think it's mainly because Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are behind this one and its getting good reviews!! Hopefully I'll get to see it this week... And bring on army of darkness 2!

great movie

i respect the original series but i was never really a fan boy of them. I guess i just dont care for horror movies in general.

That being said, i thought this movie was fantastic. It didn't play dumb and really upped the amount of violence you normally see. The effects were practical and it never tried to be something it wasnt.

8/10 (which is probably the highest i'd give a horror film except for selects like "Psycho" and "Silence of the Lambs)
