i voted for kiss kiss fully expecting to be the only one.glad to see i was wrong. i think that role is one of his most realistic and fun. very flawed hero in a loveable and hilarious way.

Zodiac

It's not his best performance but the best movie he was in. It's a fantastic piece of cinema.
My top 5 would look something like this:
1) Zodiac
2) Iron Man
3) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
4) Avengers
5) Weird Science

i went zodiac

He gets alot of live for tropic thunder.
But does he do much more than put ona voice?
It would have been a funny character no matter who played him, i also doubt it was his idea or anything.

IMO he has had a few good supporting roles and a handful of leading ones.

Really don't get the love for this guy. There are actors out there who are far better than him but they get no praise.

seriously guys am I the only one who voted for Short Cuts?

I didn't expect it to top this list. But I at least expected it to get more votes than Hearts and Souls! I know Short Cuts isn't a vehicle for RDJ but he was great in it and the movie is a masterpiece. I'd even go so far to say that it's probably Altman's best film and he's made a few classics in his lifetime. Funny trivia, Robert Altman had worked with a great many fantastic actors, but he always maintained that out of all of them the best actor he ever worked with was Robert Downey junior.

I'd like to see RDJ take on villainous roles more often, like in (spoilers) US Marshals. But his performance in Tropic Thunder was impossible not to love. That he got an Oscar nomination for an over-the-top comedy like that one is testament to just how good an actor the guy is.

NBK ALL THE WAY!!!

My favorite role I've seen Robert Downey Jr. In is also my # 2 Favorite film of all from my # 1 Favorite Director of all time. The 1994 Oliver Stone masterpiece NATURAL BORN KILLERS. Downey was fabulous as the wicked media snake Wayne Gale. I wish there were more films like NBK made today! Also, I have to mention another Downey Jr. role that is my second favorite because I think the film is one of the top 10 films from 2001 - 2010. And that film is David Fincher's 2007 mastepiece ZODIAC where

And that film is David Fincher's 2007 mastepiece ZODIAC where Downey portrayed yet another media personality Paul Avery. Although he wasn't the sleazy, ratings hungry, monster he was in NBK, he was still brilliant to watch as his character slowly disintegrates.

Totally agree. He was brilliant in Natural Born Killers and just as good in Zodiac.

I love Zodiac. It's one of my personal favorite films and it's also my favorite David Fincher film.

NBK

Not so much for Downey Jr.'s performance (which was of course outstanding), but because it's easily the best movie on this list. Zodiac would be second for me, albeit at a distance from Natural Born Killers. The Director's Cut is all the better too.

I mean really, it's hard to hit a solid trifecta, but Quentin Tarantino, Oliver Stone, & Trent Reznor nail it across the board. Can't really go wrong with all the stellar acting performances either.

"Everybody's Gay Once In A While... It's Hollywood!"

Tropic Thunder is tops in my book even though I love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I mean with lines like my comment's title and "I'm a lead farmer, mutherfu*ker!" how can it not be number one? But Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a really close second.

Live with WAYNE GALE!

Nbk is the film I discovered him with and his gonzo performance is hard to beat although Tropic Thunder comes awful close.

NBK

NBK. He makes the movie. When he's doing the piece about when M&M shoot the guy on the bicycle, it cracks me up so hard every time. "ALFIE'S Doughnut shop when.....". I love it. Less than Zero was also one of my favorites.

Robert Downey Jr. is my favorite actor of all time, so it was a little difficult to pick my favorite.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is my favorite movie of his, but Tony Stark is my favorite character of his. Him and Shane Black should do more films with one another.

The Avengers. He's a good actor, but Tony Stark is his best character to date. He just embodies the guy. And Avengers is his best portrayal of Stark yet, although I haven't seen IM3 yet, so my opinion will probably change with that.

Tropic Thunder. Still the best comedy in years, I put it up there with Blazing Saddles among the all-time great satire movies.

Possibly Zodiac. Although one of my favorites isn't even on here. He was great (and the film was all-around fantastic) in 'Charlie Bartlett.'
