MOVIE POLL: Would you be interested in an Iron Man movie if Robert Downey Jr. didn't return?

May. 5, 2013by: Dave Davis

Would you be interested in an Iron Man movie if Robert Downey Jr. didn't return?

Yeah, I think the character (and the Marvel movie universe in general) is bigger than one actor.
Not sure... it depends on who they recast as Tony Stark.
Absolutely not, RDJ owns the role and nobody else could fill the boots.
It's possible, but only if they leave Stark behind and put an entirely different character in the armor.
Maybe... whenever it's time for the inevitable remake.

To me, RDJ *IS* Iron Man. But I'd rather the character live on if he wasn't interested in reprising.

I have to admit I would see it but I just can't imagine it would be as deftly infused with light sarcasm without RDJ. And that's really the hallmark of Iron Man.

They're building a big universe so it's not crazy to replace the character not the actor. But if a change of actor has to be made, I think Dominic Cooper should take the part. He's already played Daddy Stark, he could play the son...

What about a war machine movie instead?

I would recast him with someone that has a different style to RDJ rather than someone trying to emulate him.

I like how each of the Iron Man movies showed a different side to Tony - that way we get so see some range in RDJ. In the first movie he turned over a new leaf and wanted to make a positive difference to the world. The second movie was about his arrogance/cockiness and the third is about his anxiety problem.

After watching the third movie though I did think I would rather see a War Machine movie. We've seen 4 movies where Tony Stark saves the day and it gets a bit boring now. It's like how 24 got repetitive after season 3. You know Jack is going to win but what if they got Tony Almeida to save the day for once? It was hilarious when...

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rhodes tried a daring escape but then gave up after he found out they can breathe fire END SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course he'll be re-cast.

There's not much of a discussion to be had. This WILL happen eventually, Marvel have gone on record to say that they should "James Bond" the character, and they should. As amazing as Downey is in this role (and he is fucking PERFECT), it's the role, the character and the stories that will sell.

It's how Marvel have changed artists over decades, but the core characters have stayed the same. Nobody needs a reboot. Perhaps a different directing style to go along with the new casting, to fit

It's how Marvel have changed artists over decades, but the core characters have stayed the same. Nobody needs a reboot. Perhaps a different directing style to go along with the new casting, to fit together as a cohesive whole instead of shoe-horning a new actor into an existing framework, but yes this will and should totally happen someday.

Batman was re-cast well, Joker was re-cast well, Supes seems to have been re-cast well (even though Chris Reeve was PERFECT). We all whined about Ed Norton being replaced, and even though I'd still love to have see his version of Banner/Hulk in Avengers...the one we got was incredible and EVERYONE immediately changed their opinions on Ruffalo the second the film was released. Hell I'm sure The Amazing Spider-Man would have probably been better received with the new cast if it just picked up from where Raimi's films left off, but with the new cast, instead of doing the same thing again.

And it's not like they'd be losing RDJ due to some shitty budgeting or casting dispute reason either, it's entirely a legitimate and inevitable end. Like everyone I'm sure I'd love for RDJ to play the role forever, but it's not going to happen. So when he wants to bow out, they can write Iron Man out of the Avengers for a 'Phase' and then eventually pick the character up and write him back in when they feel the audience is ready for a new actor in the suit. An actor we'll all complain about when he's chosen because he's not Downey, and then hopefully do a complete 180 when the film is released like we have with Hulk, when this new actor shows us something we hadn't seen before with the character.

Marvel's ethos seems to be "if it works in the comics, we'll make it work on screen' and it's been spot on so far. Tony's look has changed in the comics since the beginning, and will continue to change in the comics until the end of time with each new story and artists bringing a new perspective to the work, this should completely happen in the movies.

RDJ is great, BUT...

Future generations should be able to continually see Iron Man movies throughout the ages. Imagine if the Bond movies had stopped with Connery.

So very tough. I realize RDJ can't do Tony/Iron Man forever, but he has become the identity of the character. He just embodies the personality so well and it really is hard to imagine anyone else playing the character. I think this goes for him more than any other hero/villain in the Marvel film line up, with the exception of maybe Tom Hidleston as Loki. If they do replace RDJ, I think they will have to give a couple years before making a new Iron Man. It would be hard to get used to someone

It's a matter of time

sooner or later RDJ is going to decide he's tired of losing the weight and living on steamed chicken every time there's an IRON MAN or AVENGERS movie coming up. He's 48 years old, there's only so long he can convincingly play an action hero. Roger Moore was looking pretty sad as James Bond by the time he did OCTOPUSSY in 1983 when he was 56, and A VIEW TO A KILL was simply embarrassing.
I could get behind another actor as Iron Man, if it was the right actor.

Yes

I would still be interested. I would prefer that RDJ continue with the character, but is Marvel supposed to retire the whole character because one actor doesn't feel like doing it anymore?

I'm sure this opinion won't be popular on this site, but I find it a little ungrateful of Downey to dismiss this franchise. His career was a pile of garbage when they cast him in this role. They took an enormous chance on him, and it paid off and he is brilliant in the part, but they still took a huge

They took an enormous chance on him, and it paid off and he is brilliant in the part, but they still took a huge risk on an actor that had let people down more than once in his career. They also paid him 50 million dollars to star in The Avengers and god knows how much for IM3. I know it is a free country and he can do whatever he wants, but sometimes you gotta dance with the one that brought ya. Hugh Jackman always seems to be able to squeeze Wolverine into his schedule whenever they come calling, and he is as busy and in demand as RDJ.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe *has* pulled an Other Darrin with the Hulk, Ruffalo replacing Norton and all. However, I don't think audiences will buy someone other than Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man all that easily. I guess we can't kid ourselves about Downey, Jr. being Iron Man forever, as ideal as that would be, but it will be for the best if he sticks with the role for as long as possible. I agree with ReReality, this part really did give Downey, Jr. a new lease of acting life

Iron Man's been a great thing for RDJ. I don't think there needs to be a new solo Iron Man film, but Iron Man playing supporting roles in future Marvel movies would be great.

Never has a Phoenix metaphor been more personified...

Given RDJ's past the casting for this incarnation of Tony Stark/Iron Man was on the money. That being said it doesn't hurt to have another actor come in for the role. Furthering Extremis would be very interesting...

Well, I think with all the money Iron Man 3 is making Disney/Marvel will be able to either buy RDJ for Iron Man 4 and/or Avengers 2 or they could probably afford to clone RDJ, keep him on ice and take him out whenever Iron Man is needed.

Downey Jr IS Tony Stark/Iron Man and I think he is potentially the greatest casting for a superhero/super villain ever with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine as a close second.

I know one day that they will reboot the franchise, but for right now I just want to see Downey Jr finish the role and storyline for Tony Stark from now all the way to Avengers 3. We shouldn't even be talking about this until Phase Three is all said and done.

Iron man isnt like James Bond or Batman, where the universe revolves around him. He is now just one part of something much bigger. If you reboot it then you create a separate realm. And i dont think they would want to do that. I know they have recast characters in the past (Banner, Rhodes) but someone as big RDJ they wouldnt want to touch. Iron Man movies are done for now. There will no be another one without RDJ for a long time. They want to keep this franchise growing and progessing as long as they can, and at the rate they are going we could potentially see a never ending universe.

So while i do see the possibility of someone taking the Ironman role in the future, i dont think they will recast Tony Stark until they are ready to give up everything that his character built

RDJ is RDJ as Tony Stark, not Stark himself...

RDJ has made for an awesome Iron Man, but he doesn't define the character. Tony Stark has had a few versions throughout the comics and RDJ's is his own. He could be more of a Clarke Gable/Douglas Fairbanks mold in a non-RDJ iteration. I'd love to see someone like...no suggestions from me, but the point remains: RDJ isn't the only possible iteration of Tony Stark.

Robert Downey Jr. is to Tony Stark as Sean Connery was to James Bond. He is the original, and there will always be people who will argue that point as long as the character is carried forward and not rebooted. Downey has a particular style that would be very difficult to imitate in any way. Of course, that's not what anyone would hope his replacement would do, but it's also become an integral part of the character in the movies. Change Char + Personality

Actors will have to step out of iconic roles for tons of different reasons. You can use Iron Man in armor only role in a pinch until a proper replacement can be found. They do not rush a Bond movie until they have a new Bond. The other way to go is choose a different character arc to allow the new actor to make Stark his own. Dumbledoor is a good example they never really adequately explained his change. He's new, but the audience knew and understood circumstances. With a legitimate change

With a legitimate change allow the demon in the bottle arc to free the actor to craft a new persona. That maybe why Disney has vetoed booze, you save that destruction for a new persona allowing all the actors to ditch the alcoholic and start anew. For true longevity I am sure Marvel has failsafes. If Sam Jackson had to retire, Maria HIll becomes active director. They retire and revive and kill off characters in the comics as the writer/artist changes, to say that Comic Movies cannot is well silly. Would like to keep the cast through Phase II. Reconfigure the arc to bring in new characters in to fill in the next epic merge. I could see RDJ retire the role and Iron Man go into stasis and have a cameo 10+ years (for lots of money) to be a retired Iron Man providing tech to the current avengers. Actor's ego gets scratched cause the tech save the planet / universe, etc. Pym will probably replace Stark as the brains in the next Avengers roster. Then him and RDJ have to create a super pocket universe weapon. I am excited by the idea of growing old with Marvel, something original Star Wars fans thought they might get.

It is a "proper acting job" and more importantly, it pays proper acting money. And if he's being considered for more "proper acting jobs", it is because of his success in these movies.
