Having adored Paul Anderson’s original RESIDENT EVIL (yeah, I loved it...lay off!), I was looking forward to RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE, that is until this slapdash Sony panel kicked in to drag my expectations into the gutter. Not only was the presentation far from satisfying (I mean, nobody showed up and there was no in-depth discussion about the movie), but I also wasn’t shown anything that I hadn’t generally seen before.

The panel started off with a clip from the upcoming ANACONDAS (sequel to ANACONDA), which displayed a bunch of no-name actors, and a lousy J-Lo knock-off walking through water to then be attacked by a giant snake (no, not the one in my chinos). Sure, it looked like dumb fun cheese and we actually saw one kool kill, but I had seen most of that bit in the trailer already (and so have you!) Don’t waste my Con time with stuff I’ve seen before, man! It’s called the Internet! It’s under “I”! We’re all on it!

We were then shown a two-minute clip from RE 2, which Mila Jovo - honey twat - vich introduced via a brief pre-recorded message. The bit (which I had already seen online) left me half and half. The clip consisted of a deserted church, CG lickers, Toronto actors with guns and Alice crashing in on her motorcycle to clean house. I dug the staging of the inventive action sequence and the look of the “Lickers” (although the CG was a pinch too apparent), but found the visual style somewhat flat. It all looked like a low budget Sci-Fi channel opus of the month to me. Where’s Paul Anderson when you need him?

The lights came up and Sionna Guillory, who plays Jill Valentine in the film, popped up on stage. She was cute and quite nervous which made her look even cuter. She then introduced the finalists for the online RE2 poster contest and then vanished into thin air like my last bank statement (see them below). Hey...I had a couple of questions for her! If a studio has faith in their product, they should crank out a weighty presentation for it, particularly with their major genre fanbase before them...this was such a throwaway! I’m not sold!
