Spielberg hits delays

08.11.2004

Steven Spielberg's planned next project, an untitled film about the 1972 Munich Olympics, has been pushed back to a 2005 start date. The delays stem from Spielberg's concern over the script, originally written by Eric Roth (FORREST GUMP), and the director has brought on Tony Kushner (ANGELS IN AMERICA) to rewrite the current draft. Rumors began to circulate earlier this month that the film was delayed because of concerns of safety on the set. The film follows the true events of the Munich summer games when Palestinian terrorists killed 2 Israeli athletes and kidnapped another nine and how the Israeli Mossad group determined to track the terrorists down (footnote: the nine abductees were also killed during a deadly shootout between the terrorists and German police). It would seem that the "safety" issues was just gossip and Spielberg didn't quite have the right feel on the script. Eric Bana is still scheduled to star in the film despite the delays but Ben Kingsley has unfortunately moved on...to star in BLOODRAYNE with Uwe Boll. From Spielberg to Uwe Boll. Wow. In the meanwhile, Spielberg is contemplating whether to direct THE RIVALS or WAR OF THE WORLDS or perhaps another unknown project.
