Lone Survivor

Cream fighter-I don't really like Top Gun, it's a pretty over-rated film for me and so is Tom Cruise! Am I the only person that can't stand Tom Cruise? My fav military movie has to be Lone Survivor--in my opinion.

WTF!?

How has no one said anything about Saving Private Ryan!? It's more modern than half of these movies, and the first scene alone is enough to consider it a military movie.

Black Hawk Down for me but probably because I know someone who was there and he talked about it while we watched. Where he was, what was not shown, when he was wounded, etc

As much I can't praise Zero Dark Thirty enough, let's face it it's not really a military movie, sure the last 30 minutes are aces in terms of military goodness, but it's really a film about the investigation and intelligence gathering into the whereabouts of Osama, that investigational aspect takes up at least 2 hours of its run time.

Technically, THE KINGDOM is an FBI movie and ZERO DARK THIRTY is a CIA movie until the last 30 minutes, which is why they weren't included.

None.

My fav is PLATOON, which isn't modern.

BLACK HAWK DOWN - 3/10.
THE HURT LOCKER - 8/10.
THE MESSENGER - 6/10.

Black Hawk Down is such a grippingly awesome movie. Although I do agree with AMF, the raid from Zero Dark Thirty at the end simply cannot be beaten by any film I've ever seen. It feels so freakin realistic that you really feel like you're watching the real thing happen.

I remember watching the Green Zone -- I didn't realize from the trailers it was such a politically skewed film. Even as a war film it was pretty weak

Black Hawk Down for me... its a powerful military movie that makes you really feel for the men that served and died that day.

Jarhead

I love the way this movie points out the hilarious absurdity of it all and never for a second glorifies war by showing big action set pieces

Zero Dark Thirty

Guess it has to be Zero Dark Thirty. Really liked three kings when it came out but haven't seen it in such a long time so don't know if it holds up.

Black Hawk Down for me. The movie just doesn't let you go after we follow the Marked Vehicle to the secret hideout and things just went way downhill from there. Love the movie.

On the list - Three Kings

Surprised to see Hurt Locker so high up, that movie was boring and really didn't have much of a plot. Pretty tired and drawing a blank, trying to think of some others of the past 15 years that should be on the list and coming up with nothing. Looking forward to Lone Survivor and anything SEAL related - much respect to the boys and thanks to all who serve, RIP to the ones who we have lost.

the first two movies i thought of weren't on this list.

"The Kingdom" and "Zero Dark Thirty". If i had to pick, i wouldve gone ZD30. Of this list given, i would go with "Hurt Locker"

These types of films usually lean towards being over the top, chest-thumping and jingoistic. I do not mean this as an insult to any of the men and women in the service and they do have my utmost respect, but I'm just not a fan of the way many of these films portray what they do. Just look at any of the Transformers films for instance. Act of Valour ended up as a glorified recruitment video. I did like the ending of Captain Phillips because the military rescue operation was not the focus of the

I did like the ending of Captain Phillips because the military rescue operation was not the focus of the story; Captain Phillips' personal survival was. This does not mean I think all modern military films are that way and Lone Survivor does seem like it will be a worthwhile watch.

Used to love these movies, not so much, but for one:

The final assault sequence in "Zero Dark Thirty" is second to none in terms of the [link] It felt like the most realistic, least fanfare-thrilling of any military scene ever depicted by Hollywood. A real docudrama moment.
