Festival of Fear 2/2

09.02.2004

Part 1 / Part 2

Unlike the folks at the Toronto Film Festival, who apparently don't believe in supporting their local Canadian brethren, we were all very pleased to be invited to the 1ST RUE MORGUE ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF FEAR, which took place in Toronto last weekend, August 27-29. This event was also the ideal opportunity for our first Canadian female freelancer, Ms. Serena Whitney, to cover what is essentially an all-male testosterone event (we told her to watch her back before we sent her out into the wolves and she made it out alive!) The event was a super success, and as per our usual JoBlo.com/Arrow in the Head style, we hope that you enjoy the awesome coverage that Serena was able to nab for us all (you see, entering that "Win a Date with JoBlo" thing wasn't so goofy after all, eh?)

So stay tuned for all the details about George Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD and find out why Tom Savini embarrassed our lady-friend during his panel. Also, see how Bill Moseley compared Rob Zombie's latest, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS to FINDING NEMO and even went as far as to mention a possible rating of NC-17 (nice!). Read on further if you want to find out how many more TALES FROM THE CRYPT and HELLRAISER movies will be coming out soon (the answer: a ton!), the possibility of a MICHAEL MYERS VS PINHEAD movie and the possibility of Kane Hodder (better known as the ultimate Jason from the FRIDAY THE 13TH series) playing his rival, Michael Myers? Hmmm. Lots of goodies. Part 1 of 2 below.

BILL MOSELEY

The next panel I visited belonged to the kick-ass horror actor, Bill Moseley. Moseley is best known for his roles as Choptop, the head-scratching psychotic brother from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2”, and Otis, the ultimate bad-ass in “House of a 1000 Corpses.” He is also reprising his role as Otis in “Devil Rejects”, the most anticipated horror sequel of the year that continues the sick and twisted story of the sadistic family. Out of all the panels at this year’s expo, this was the one I was most looking forward to, for I find that Bill Moseley is one of the hidden gems of the horror genre. (To this day, I can’t watch the famous radio station scene from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2” without getting chills up my spine!) Considering this is the man that whenever he appeared on screen made me feel tense, frightened, and extremely uncomfortable, I was pleasantly surprised to see he is a humble, hilarious, and down to earth man that I’m glad I had a chance to converse with.

DOUG BRADLEY

I met Doug Bradley at an after-party the night before, and was surprised to see this articulate, intelligent, older British man was the man who plays the renowned role as Pinhead in the “Hellraiser” series. Although I’m not the biggest fan of the series, that didn’t stop me from attending one of the most amusing panels to hit the convention. During the panel, he answered questions asked by his fans about the delay of the “Hellraiser” sequels, the possibility of a Michael Myers vs. Pinhead, and his take on his minuscule role in “HellRaiser 5.” Overall, the panel was one of the most informative experiences for me at the expo.

KANE HODDER

For my last panel, I encountered the man who defined the entire 80’s slasher genre. This man was none other than the fierce Kane Hodder, notoriously known for his role as the original Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series. The actor/professional stuntman spent the hour entertaining his fans with inside jokes. Besides having to sit through some die-hard fans’ asking absurd and outlandish questions about what hardware store Jason shops at (it’s a series about a boy who drowned, and despite being dead, he has miraculously grew up to become a unstoppable killing machine. Does it really fucking matter what store he went to shop at???), it was a killer good time!!
