Darabont to do Thing

09.07.2004

I recently ordered and watched THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION for the umpteenth time and let me tell you...films don't get much better than that (it's currently ranked as the #2 movie on the IMDB, right behind THE GODFATHER). I found it interesting that the writer/director of that movie, Frank Darabont, recently said on the GOODFELLAS special edition DVD, that he used to watch the Scorsese film on the weekends, while he was shooting SHAWSHANK, for continuing inspiration. Very cool. Two of my favorite movies of all-time (by the way, don't make the dumb mistake that I made and buy SHAWSHANK right now...its 2-disc special edition DVD is coming out on October 5th --my sister's birthday). That said, both Darabont and director Ridley Scott (along with brother Tony) just signed big sci-fi deals with the Sci-Fi Channel, with the Scotts exec-producing a 4-hour remake of THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and Darabont taking a shot at directing a 4-hour version of THE THING.

The Sci-Fi Channel seems to be getting more and more popular among A-listers around Hollywood, with folks like Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Brian Singer and others signing on the science-fiction line that is dotted as well. A man by the name of David Johnson is working on the script of THE THING, which would be based on the short story "Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell (and made famous by John Carpenter's ultimate version in 1982 starring Kurt Russell and his beard). Darabont said that he believed the script would be done by "Christmas", and that shooting would take place next year, with a possible air-time sometime in late 2005 or early 2006. Should be interesting, although we don't get the Sci-Fi Channel up here in Canada, so that kinda sucks for us. What sucks even worse is that we DO get the Space Channel. Bugh.
