Winona's back

09.13.2004

Winona Ryder has laid relatively low since her conviction for shoplifting. She was scheduled to star in Woody Allen's MELINDA AND MELINDA, only to drop out at the last minute. She recently wrapped filming on A SCANNER DARKLY with Keanu Reeves but beyond that things have been rather quiet. Hopefully that will all change, as Ryder has signed on for her first lead role since her infamous trial. The actress will reteam with HEATHERS director Michael Lehmann for the dark comedy MARY WARNER. Ryder will play the title character, an actress who experiences a set of "life-changing misadventures" after eating a batch of tainted brownies her stoner roommate cooked up. Lehmann describes the film "more like a dysfunctional FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF than a stoner movie because the humor and characters are as much layered and sophisticated as visual." So far no studio is set to distribute and that's just the way Lehmann and Ryder wanted it. They felt the studio system would trim out a lot of the edgier references in the film (specifically the numerous discussions of smoking pot) and deliberately set to finance the film independently. The film will begin shooting in LA this January with producers looking to take the film on the festival circuit next year.
