I chose Terminator 2, but it was a toss up between that and Predator. It was really hard to choose. Kindergarten Cop was great cause it was different from anything else he has done, and Last Action Hero was fun also. Really hard to choose. I'm looking forward to Maggie, and I hope it's great!

True Lies

Terminator 2 is Arnold's best film,
but for performance it's gotta be True Lies. A rare and brilliant blend of action and comic spoof that Arnold, Jamie, Tom, and James Cameron all pulled off brilliantly.

True Lies. It played to all of his strengths and it's the most charismatic, humorous and kick-ass he's been. I totally agree with Mr. Moe, it wasn't a standard-issue straight action part but it also wasn't a wacky, awkward comedic part. Pregnant Arnold, Arnold getting a hold of a toy for his son, Arnold being the twin brother of Danny DeVito...valiant attempts, but nowhere near as successful as True Lies. He seems to work really well with James Cameron, which is why the rumour of him playing

FYI, you spelled Schwarzenegger wrong. It's two 'g's, not two 'n's

Terminator 2 is my favorite film of his, but his best performance was True Lies. It was different than most of his performances (where he just plays "action hero Schwarzenegger") , and he did such a great job with the role. Predator was also another genuinely believable performance.

He said it himself in Last Action Hero, when he's at the video store with Danny and they're looking at a poster of T2. "He's fantastic, that's his best performance ever."

So to actually answer the question, T2.

Conan the Barbarian is the sweet spot between Arnold at his most "believable" (a la Predator and Terminator 2) and his most singularly entertaining (a la Commando, Total Recall, and Running Man.) So I picked that.

Note: when I say 'believable' I mean you identify with his character, you cheer for him and get scared for him.

How do you choose?

I picked Total Recall. Love it.

Deja vu..?

Wasn't this poll already conducted? I dunno, maybe i'm mistaken but seriously 'Arnie' and 'performance' in the same sentence?? Now thats a tough one because its usually 'Arnie' and his 'best films'.

However Red Heat kinda stood out because he was playing a no nonsense Soviet cop complete with bilingual bonus instead of the usual 'American' cops he normally does.

In Colleratel Damage he tried his best though Arnie playing an 'everyman' type hero didn't work for me (despite not firing a gun) because you just know he'll save the day - if you picture (a pre-Taken) Liam Neeson or (a then rising star) Russell Crowe, the action and tension would have worked wonderfully.

Yeah, I could have mentioned the Terminator films but that would have been too easy.

I voted for Terminator 2, but my favorite non Terminator role(s) of his are Predator and Batman and Robin.

I can understand why people have voted for T2 and although I love Arnie in the role I felt his acting was tested a bit more in Predator and he fit the role of Dutch perfectly.

Conan the Barbarian

It's one of his most iconic performances IMO. He had made name for himself in the bodybuilding arena and if this film flopped it probably would have meant the end of his career. This was followed by the God awful Conan the Destroyer and pseudo-sequel Red Sonja both directed by Richard Fleischer (sp?). Predator comes a close second, but to me Arnold will always be Conan.

I voted for 'Commando.'

That's the one where he runs around without underwear, right?

I gave it to Total Recall for effort, though I was tempted to say The Terminator, because it's an against-type role made all the more chilling for his emotionless performance.

If you're going on performance alone, I picked Kindergarten Cop. The movie still makes me laugh today and it's just a complete 180 from The Terminator.

Since the question is strictly about performance, my vote goes to End of Days. The movie itself was not so great but it was one of the best acting performances Schwarzenegger ever had.
