'Nofsky off Watchmen

11.04.2004

First there was the news that seminal graphic novel THE WATCHMEN was finally making its way to the big screen. That was good. Then there was the news that X-MEN writer David Hayter would be making his directorial debut with the project. That wasn't so good. Then there was the news that Darren Aronosfky was replacing Hayter as director. That was really good news. Then came the news yesterday, courtesy of Ain't It Cool News, that Aronofsky left THE WATCHMEN. That wasn't good. But then there was the postscript to that story that said Aronosfky had to leave the project because of a scheduling conflict with his ambitious sci-fi flick THE FOUNTAIN with Hugh Jackman. So that was sort of good. But still bad cause he's not directing WATCHMEN. Apparently Paramount really, really, REALLY wants to get this film out in theaters in 2006 and with Aronofsky's schedule, that just wasn't happening. So they're busy finding a replacement that will be able to get this puppy filming before either a) superhero movies become passe, or b) creator Alan Moore comes to his senses and realizes that maybe this whole movie thing wasn't such a good idea. Stay tuned...
