Weitz drops Dark

12.15.2004

Chris Weitz apparently didn't think his materials were ready for HIS DARK MATERIALS. The director has amicably parted ways with New Line and will no longer helm the adaptation of Philip Pullman's trilogy. Weitz said in a statement, "It will be an extraordinary film, but at this point in my life, I am not the right director to bring it to pass." Weitz wrote the script for the film that New Line executives were said to be thrilled about and still plan to use for the film. A search for a replacement is already underway. New Line head Toby Emmerich said, "I can only respect him for being realistic about the physical, emotional and technical demands of the project." Weitz last directed ABOUT A BOY for Universal and took this project as he and his former co-director and brother Paul parted ways. His brother will open IN GOOD COMPANY later this month with Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace and Scarlett Johansson. The project is one New Line has high hopes for to fill the epic void left when the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy ended last year.
