1st Sundance pickup

01.04.2005

Sundance hasn't even begun yet and Miramax has already snatched up one of the films set to premiere at the festival. Dimension Films (the genre subsidiary of Miramax) has ponied up $3.5 million for the rights to WOLF CREEK, a horror film described as being in the vein of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and OPEN WATER. The film, written and directed by Greg McLean, is based on Australia's so-called "Backpacker Murders" in which seven hikers were killed. The film will focus on three backpackers in particular who meet a seemingly friendly stranger who turns their trip into something much more terrifying. Dimension has got a relatively light slate in 2005 with CURSED and SIN CITY being among the few releases for the studio. The pre-emptive acquisition is unusual because of Miramax's current state of limbo as their contract with Disney expires.
