Spielberg and Abe

01.12.2005

Steven Spielberg has decided on his follow-up to WAR OF THE WORLDS. The director will step behind the camera to film TRANSFORMERS with Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Steve Buscemi and Angelina Jolie set to star. OK fanboys, take a breather - I'm just yankin' your chain. But Spielberg is talking to Liam Neeson about starring in his long-planned Abe Lincoln biopic, which he's ramping up for a January '06 start date. Spielberg will begin the lengthy post-production process on WAR OF THE WORLDS in March and will then have to spend the rest of the summer and fall promoting the film. At that point, pre-production on the Lincoln film would begin. The film will be based on a biography by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin titled "The Uniter: The Genius of Abraham Lincoln." The Lincoln pic would reunite Spielberg and Neeson who last worked together on SCHINDLER'S LIST. Spielberg has been thinking about the Lincoln pic since 2001 when DreamWorks optioned the rights to the aforementioned biography. Should the pic begin filming at the start of next year, another planned Spielberg film, VENGEANCE, which was set to star Eric Bana, could be put off indefinitely. As for TRANSFORMERS, you'll have to be happy with Spielberg working as exec producer on that film.
