RIP: Ossie & Wormer

Two movie icons passed on today. Ossie Davis and John Vernon, best known for his role as Dean Wormer in ANIMAL HOUSE, died at the ages of 87 and 72 respectively. Davis will be best remembered by me for his startling work in Spike Lee's early films like DO THE RIGHT THING and JUNGLE FEVER. In 2004, Davis and longtime wife and fellow actor Ruby Dee were among the artists selected to receive the Kennedy Center Honors. As for Vernon... Marmalard? Dead! Niedermeyer? Dead! Dean Wormer?... Sadly dead. John Vernon was a character actor that made a living playing the villain you loved to hate, a trait exemplified in Dean Vernon Wormer of ANIMAL HOUSE fame. Beyond that classic film and that classic role, I remember Vernon from such cult classics as KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, I'M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA and ERNEST GOES TO CAMP. But he also turned in strong performances in DIRTY HARRY, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES and for Alfred Hitchcock in TOPAZ. Both will be remembered fondly by the crew here at JoBlo.
