July 4 not Fantastic?

02.08.2005

This year's Fourth of July may be pretty good, great even, but it won't be FANTASTIC. Fox has pulled FANTASTIC FOUR out of the big holiday weekend and moved it back a week to July 8. The move was done mostly to avoid a direct conflict with the Steven Spielberg/Tom Cruise juggernaut WAR OF THE WORLDS, which has already mounted an impressive marketing campaign. FANTASTIC FOUR will now go up against BEWITCHED and the Kate Hudson thriller SKELETON KEY. But Fox isn't gonna just let WAR OF THE WORLDS run away with the holiday weekend. They've shifted another movie onto that high-profile release date to go toe-to-toe with the Spielberg/Cruise connection. That film is ROLL BOUNCE. Poor, poor ROLL BOUNCE (a Searchlight comedy about urban rollerskating in the 70s). The FANTASTIC shift had a ripple effect on other releases around Hollywood. FUN WITH DICK AND JANE - the Jim Carrey/Tea Leoni caper comedy - has gotten out of the summer business altogether, moving to December 21st. DUKES OF HAZZARD now only has to share DICK AND JANE's former release date, June 24th. with HERBIE: FULLY LOADED. But wait....there's more. New Line moved up its Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn comedy THE WEDDING CRASHERS to July 15 from July 22. Fox then shifted the Martin Lawrence sports comedy REBOUND to July 22 against the Michael Bay sci-fi flick THE ISLAND. Fox also moved FEVER PITCH to REBOUND's old date of April 8. Whew!
