Sommers next is...

02.15.2005

I'll admit I wasn't a fan of VAN HELSING. Or any of the MUMMY movies. But I'm still willing to give director Steven Sommers the benefit of the doubt. I think his heart is in the right place but he just needs to ease up on the cheesy CGI a little bit. Hopefully with his next project he can shake that nasty habit. Speaking of his next project, Universal has just ponied up some cash to acquire the rights to Terry Brooks' MAGIC KINGDOM series of novels for Sommers to direct. The studio has also hired Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (CITY SLICKERS) to adapt the first novel "Magic Kingdom for Sale." The story follows a recently widowed lawyer who responds to a mysterious ad to purchase a magic kingdom. He, and his skeptical teenage children, then must unite the citizens of said kingdom to destroy an evil demon. Sommers would produce the film through his Universal-based production company. Sommers has a number of other films in the works including writing and producing a remake of FLASH GORDON. As for "Kingdom," the sixth book in Brooks' series is due later this year.
