C'mon Hollywood #57

...put on some weight!
by JoBlo

It was only after re-watching JERRY MAGUIRE again the other night -- for what was likely my 28th time or something -- that I noticed that the co-star of that film, a very cute actress who goes by the name of Renee Zellweger, was actually still working in Hollywood these days, only now, she looks like a stick-woman with twigs as arms. That’s right, there ain’t nothing in the industry that’s pissing me off this week, but the fact that lovely, voluptuous and – dare I say — normal-looking actresses from yesteryear are looking more and more like those lifeless, so-called “perfect” and skinny supermodels of late, is becoming a habit that I for one, would like to stand up and spit upon.

As if it’s not bad enough that teenage girls have to deal with the slutty public images of skanks like Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, women who seem to think that behaving in an overtly-whorish manner is the only way to gain any attention in their industry, but nowadays, many actresses seem to be pushing the “skinny” envelope to the point of 1) looking malnourished 2) sending a negative message out to the young girls in the audience who look up to some of them and 3) losing sight of what partly made them “interesting” to begin with it.

Has anybody seen Christina Ricci lately? What the hell happened there? As I flipped through the channels the other day, I noticed her on an old episode of “Ally McBeal” and honestly couldn’t believe that it was her. Her face looked like it was shrunken in like a mummy or something. Bugh. Where’s the meaty hottie from BUFFALO ’66, man? We want her back!

And Jennifer Connelly? It’s nice that you got an Oscar and all, but we loved you for both your talent and luscious figure, honey-bunny. What’s with the "stick look" of late? Does anybody remember her picking up that Oscar back in 2002? Of course you don’t! She looked like every other skinny starlet that night and didn’t have any of that extra “oomph” that we loved about her back in the CAREER OPPORTUNITIES days. I also heard that she might have gotten a breast reduction. What’s up with that?!? (mind you, if it was for medical reasons, that’s understandable).

I can bring up a dozen other examples of such ladies “losing their load” for the pictures, but it’s all so sad. Zellweger is one actress who looked absolutely adorable in her breakthrough role as Dorothy Boyd in JERRY MAGUIRE and seems to have lost that look (and corresponding “health”?), as she turns up in white face and black hair nowadays. Put some weight back on ya, girlfriend…eat some burgers, be….real!!! We’ll love you anyway!

A perfect example of an actress who doesn’t seem to have fallen for the whole “stick” campaign is the wondrous Kate Winslet, who ironically, has the most Oscar nominations among all of her peers (4 so far, and she’s only 29 years old). This girl looks hot no matter what the role or the weight or the hair color, because she doesn’t feel the need to kowtow to some Hollywood system where ladies allow themselves to be wrangled up like anorexic sheep. She looks hot, she looks REAL and she might even be considered a great so-called “role model” for teenage girls today (mind you, teenage girls should only be looking to their parents as the real “role models”, but that’s another rant for another column and another vodka martini!).

Anyway, kudos to Winslet and all other actresses (and no, I’m not talking about you, Courteney Cox-- another “stick woman”) who maintain themselves, despite all of the pressures in their image-oriented industry. Speaking from a fan’s point of view…we love you girls for looking REAL -- not fake and skinny and unhealthy. And yeah, that includes the future WONDER WOMAN!!!
