First Guide clip

04.14.2005

Hitchhiker's Guide mini poster article pic Well, folks, Moviefone has got your first look at THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. The clip shows Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman), Ford Prefect (Mos Def), Zaphod Beeblebrox (Sam Rockwell), and Marvin the Paranoid Android (voiced by Alan Rickman) when they've first arrived on Vogsphere, the home planet of the Vogons (who initially destroy the Earth to make way for a hyperspace bypass), in order to search for the recently kidnapped Trillian (Zooey Deschanel). It differs from the book and radio shows as Trillian was never kidnapped by the Vogons but, in the movie, it's done (I presume) in order to set up the romance between Trillian and Dent.

What bothers me about the clip is that it seems a little bit slapstick and I never really thought about The Guide as slapstick. Fortunately, though, the slapstick kinda helps to compliment the generally good humor in it. Check out the clip over HERE.

What's also interesting to note is that the first negative review of The Guide came out a few days ago. Normally, I wouldn't think too much of it because I wasn't expecting everybody to have a joygasm when they see the movie (unlike me who has a joygasm just saying the name) but this review is from a pretty reputable source. The reviewer is MJ Simpson and he's the "leading authority" on all things Douglas Adams. Unfortunately, his review is pretty scathing. There was maybe a minute of the movie that he actually liked. While it is slightly disappointing and it really doesn't change my anticipation for the movie, Simpson does bring up some valid points. However, it's possible that he's a little too attached to the material and was being overly analytical - "missing the forest for the trees" and whatnot (is that the right cliche?). Either way, it's an excellent read. Check out the small spoiler free review HERE and the spoiler-ridden and insanely long review HERE.
