Ring 3? Meh...

05.27.2005

I have to say I was royally disappointed by THE RING 2. Royally. I was really looking forward to that film and with Hideo Nakata directing I had high hopes. But when a 15-minute short film ("Rings") designed to promote your feature is actually better and scarier than your feature, you know you've got problems. I would've been perfectly happy to let the RING franchise die after the painfully disappointing sequel but DreamWorks isn't so willing to let it go. Producer Walter Parkes confirmed that DreamWorks is developing THE RING 3 and that it will be made on a smaller scale on the first two, which were budgeted at around $60 million. Parkes said RING 3 would be "by its very nature a small, intimate movie." That's probably because the law of diminishing returns has kicked in (RING 2 grossed less than $50 million than its predecessor) and the studio wants to help ensure it's profitability by reducing the budget considerably. Naomi Watts, who was contractually obliged to star in RING 2, won't return but the film will follow a new victim up against the infamous videotape.
