D'Works nabs Match

06.01.2005

Woody Allen has returned to DreamWorks, the studio under which he released some of his most disappointing films (CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION, HOLLYWOOD ENDING), for his upcoming film MATCH POINT. The romantic thriller, which screened recently at Cannes, was picked up by DreamWorks for North American distribution at a cost of $4 million. Allen reportedly rejected higher offers from both Focus Features and Sony Pictures Classics to return to DreamWorks where he had that a three-picture deal that churned out the aforementioned pics plus SMALL TIME CROOKS and ANYTHING ELSE. Not surprisingly, Fox Searchlight, who released Allen's last film MELINDA AND MELINDA, opted not to bid on this project. MATCH POINT (read JoBlo's review here) stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Emily Mortimer and follows a tennis instructor who marries into a wealthy family only to fall in love with another woman - the girlfriend of his new brother-in-law. Allen said in a statement, ""I've always had enormous respect and affection for the people at DreamWorks, and their enthusiasm over my film makes me feel absolutely certain we chose the right people to distribute it." The director is currently prepping his next film, a comedy, which will also star Johansson in the lead.
