M:I3 an official go

06.08.2005

In the past week or so, Paramount has had to make some tough decisions regarding two films, THE WATCHMEN and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3, whose budgets were soaring to a range the studio was uncomfortable with. While the bad news is that WATCHMEN was unable to be pared down to a version the studio was happy with and was ultimately dropped, the good news is that the studio has come to a compromise regarding M:I3 and given it the final greenlight. There had been much speculation over the past few weeks that Paramount was close to pulling the plug on M:I3 for a number of reasons. Variety confirms today that while that it was certainly true that the studio was considering giving M:I3 the axe, it was only for budgetary concerns and not because of any of star Tom Cruise's recent extracurricular behavior. Reportedly the studio has trimmed about 10% of the $150MM+ budget as well as a portion of Cruise's backend (ahem...) deal that was a whopping 30% of gross. Shoots in Shanghai and other exotic locales were nixed to help bring costs down. Filming is now scheduled to begin on July 18th in Italy with Michelle Monaghan and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers still co-starring. Tom's other big Paramount blockbuster, WAR OF THE WORLDS, hits theaters on June 29.
