Halo goes to Fox/U

06.10.2005

The Alex Garland script for the adaptation of Microsoft's popular video game HALO was delivered to studio's this week (in publicity stunt fashion by a character from the game). It was one of the most hotly anticipated scripts but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to expectations. At best it was described as "dense" and at worst "terrible." Several studios, including New Line, DreamWorks and Warner Bros., immediately passed citing the high cost (they were originally asking $10 million upfront plus 15% of the gross) and high risk. But two studios stuck in there and it looks like they'll partner on the high-profile pic. Fox and Universal are set to team on the project with the latter taking distribution stateside. Because of the lukewarm reception to the script, they were able to knock the asking price in half with other financial negotiations still taking place. Microsoft had also included a provision that production was to begin by it appears they'll instead settle for an agreement to have the film in theaters by 2007. While it won't be ready for the launch of Xbox 360, Microsoft and developer Bungie are already working on a third installment of the popular game series.
