Mel gets Apocalypto

07.22.2005

Mel Gibson is prepping his next directorial project, an ambitious action film titled APOCALYPTO, which will begin filming this October for a summer 2006 release. Disney recently won a crowded bidding war to distribute the film here in the States. Gibson's company Icon, which made upwards of $500 million on PASSION OF THE CHRIST, will fully finance the film and distribute the film in all international territories. Studio executives interested in the film went to Gibson's office in Santa Monica to read the script under heavy security. Gibson and Icon were concerned about leaks after the PASSION script got out and sparked a firestorm of controversy. It was reported that almost all the major studios sent representatives and while some passed due to creative concerns, the rest all agreed to Gibson's terms with Icon eventually choosing Disney (who Gibson had worked with on SIGNS and RANSOM). The film is set in an ancient civilization 3,000 years ago but beyond that not much is known about it. It is said to feature, like both BRAVEHEART and PASSION, explicit and violent action sequences and the titled is a Greek word that means "unveiling" or "new beginning." Gibson made it very clear to studio execs that the film has no religious theme. Gibson and Icon are already in theprocess of casting the film and they have remarked that they may use an unknown or little known actor in the lead.
