Carell back to Almighty

08.26.2005

A while back Universal hatched a concept for a sequel to their highly successful Jim Carrey flick BRUCE ALMIGHTY. The concept would have Jim's Bruce character again called upon by God, this time to build an ark to save animals from an upcoming flood. Only Carrey wasn't interested in returning. So unfortunately the studio went out and threw a bunch of cash at Steve Carell to reprise his role as Bruce's dicky co-worker Evan Baxter and renamed the film EVAN ALMIGHTY. I say unfortunately not because I don't like Carell, but because I love the dude. He deserves a lot better than a half-assed sequel to BRUCE ALMIGHTY. His role in BRUCE was part of what launched him to the stardom he has now and it was a great little role, but why expand upon it? Why not just let it be what it was? That'd be like making a sequel to GROUNDHOG DAY and centering it around Needlenose Ned instead of Phil. For a starring role in ALMIGHTY, Carell is expected to clear over $5 million for his role in the film. While Carrey and Jennifer Aniston won't be returning, the studio is in talks with Morgan Freeman to reprise his role as God in the film. Just recently Carell attached himself to a New Line comedy spec HIGH T, which would have him playing a guy on medication that gives him drastic mood swings. If all goes according to plan for Universal, Carell would film ALMIGHTY while on break from the second season of "The Office" later this year.
