@Lenono

You can't just disregard great movies because you don't want to kiss somebody's ass.
If somebody makes a great movie, they should be nominated. I've seen THE BUTLER, RUSH and PRISONERS. All great movies and
they got no love. I watched maybe half on the actual nominations, and while good movies, none were as great as the three I mentioned.

Surprised...

there's no love for Prisoners. The Academy voters really do forget in a few months. I'm happy no Hanks, Oprah or Ron Howard, their egos have gotten enough ass-kissing over the years. We can let Meryl have a few skips now. I don't know how you can top the effects of a Pacific Rim but I'll be going for Gravity most of the night. An amazing experience.

And nothing else.
The rest of the noms are completely predictable.

Here's a thought: Jonah Hill has more acting Oscar nominations than Gary Oldman. Let that sink in for a minute.

As glad as I am that Hill was nominated for Wolf of Wall Street... that's just horrifying. Gary Oldman should have more wins than Hill has nominations!

Thumbs up for every nomination that Her got (especially the score, which I wouldn't have expected to get in), The Act of Killing, Roger Deakins and Barkhad Abdi.

Thumbs down for not including Hanks for Captain Phillips (best performance of the year IMO), Her for cinematography, or Spring Breakers for anything.

A decent list. I guess I'm the only one who thought Rush was award worthy (as was place beyond the pines). Glad I'm not the only one who wasn't in love with American Hustle. The actors were all great, but the film itself could have been better. I'm hoping 12 Years a Slave gets the win for actor, supporting actor, and picture.

Good list overall. Would have liked to see more love for Prisoners too, but what can you do. Still bugs me that Streep gets nominated for Every fucking thing she does. Ugh.

I've always loved how Best Visual Effects should go to one of the summer movies but it somehow manages to go to an Oscar bait movie.

Decent year.

I still need to see a few of these movies but I think overall it's ok. I liked American Hustle a lot but these noms are making it seem like they reinvented the wheel... Jennifer Lawrence had a funny part in the film but she does not need another Oscar nor will it be deserved. Bale and Renner made that movie enjoyable for me along with the excessive cleavage.

Immediate Thoughts

-I really need to see Nebraska. Is it really THAT good?
-STILL stand by position that 12 Years of Slave was very well-made, but I had a ton of issues with the "story" they decided to tell. Completely non-racist, but it felt more like "let's watch a black man get his ass kicked for 2 hours" vs. a compelling and unfolding "story."
-My favorite movie of the year was "The Spectacular Now," and I knew that wasn't going to get anything.
-I think best actor will come down to Leo vs. Matthew. I've

-I think best actor will come down to Leo vs. Matthew. I've seen both movies, and they both gave great performances.
-Tom Hanks getting snubbed is brutal. However, every performance (sans Nebraska because I haven't seen it yet) was incredibly deserving. Plus, he was never going to win anyways.
-Huge snubs for Inside Llewn Davis & Saving Mr. Banks? I thought Colin Farrell was the best in that movie, he should've gotten more praise.
-Jared Leto........he plays a gay transvestite dying of AIDS. You can't find a more tailor-made character for awards than that. Unless he was mentally handicapped. (I kid. He was great in the movie).

He's actually playing a transsexual, not a transvestite. And, thus, is not gay, either.

Dude, being a transsexual doesn't change what you were born as. Jared Leto played a gay MAN.

That's actually not true, my friend! She is a woman, regardless of what her genitals look like. So, since she is seen with men in the film, we can conclude that she's not gay.

Ok, once again, it doesn't matter if he became a woman through surgery because he was born a man and liked men before he had the surgery. That makes him gay.

Well, that's actually not how it works ("born" a man and "becoming" a woman aren't really accurate terms), but eh! I'm not interested in debating such things on a movie forum--just wanted to point out a potentially problematic inaccuracy in someone's post. Peace.

"Trying to explain gender identity on a forum like this is akin to hitting your head against a wall. But good job trying kivzirrum."

I explained with common sense fact that what I said was correct and in no way wrong...It doesn't matter if he became a woman through surgery because he was born a man and liked men BEFORE he had the surgery. So he liked men when he was still a man, so that means he's gay. The surgery didn't change what he was born as. Yes, in a way it did, but he was born a man

No big deal, but like I said--if you're interested =)

Mostly happy because some of the films I liked best are here. Thought that American Hustle was getting a bit too much credit, being nominated so much. It was a great movie, but not nearly as award worthy as it's coming off here. I agree with most that Prisoners got snubbed. Also thought that Her is missing for director and actor, and Emma Thompson should have been nominated for best actress in place of Meryl Streep. In fact, why is August here at all? Everything I've seen about that movie says

Everything I've seen about that movie says it's terrible. I'm thinking that Slave, American Hustle, and Gravity are probably going to clean up, but I think that Dallas Byers Club has the potential to be a dark horse and steal some awards away as Jared Leto and, gasp, Matthew McConaughey were both award worthy in their roles. I'd even go so far as to say that it would deserve a best film award, though I already know that's not going to happen. Slave seems like a shoe in for that one.

I'm happy with most of the nominations (it goes to show how great the competition is this year), but I'm a little disappointed that Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall got snubbed for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor (Jonah Hill was great in Wolf, but Gyllenhall was phenomenal) for Prisoners, and that Spike Jonze and Joaquin Phoenix got snubbed for Best Director and Best Actor for Her.

Would have maybe liked to have seen something for Place Beyond the Pines and maybe seeing Jeremy Renner

And I'm disappointed that Inside Llewyn Davis received NO LOVE. Movie was amazing and I thought it would at least get a couple of well deserved nominations.

1) Surprising snubs: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (it's only up for Cinematography and Soung Mixing); SAVING MR. 2) Not surprising snubs: THE BUTLER; ENOUGH SAID; FRANCES HA; FRUITVALE STATION; MUD; RUSH; SHORT TERM 12; Robert Redford in ALL IS LOST; Scarlett Johansson in HER;

No real surprises. The biggest snub to me is actually in a technical category. How could Rush not be nominated for Best Film Editing? It's not just the best editing of the year, its some of the best I've seen. Anyway, it is what it is. It's funny that Chris Hemsworth was asked to announce the nominations. Like, "Well, at one time Rush was a shoo-in for multiple nominations, how about instead of any nominations at all you just come read aloud all people that got nominated instead of you." I

I wasn't rooting for Rush all that much, but I was at least expecting noms in the editing and sound categories and supporting actor for Daniel Bruhl.

Yeah I thought he was pretty great, the Sound of Music bit was probably my favorite Oscar moment, period.

They should also bring back Chris Rock & John Stewart.

-edit-
And real talk, about the boob song. Did those assholes complaining miss the whole point? William Shatner went back in time and STOPPED him from singing the song. So really, it didn't happen. Get over it.

I think it was a mess. Macfarlane tried valiantly but a lot of things weren't in place. The orchestra wasn't even in the same room! It didn't seem slickly coordinated with all the cogs turning smoothly and Macfarlane just seemed out of place. I'm not a fan of his but the guy can be funny and he is a showman and I don't think he was as good as he could have been that night, and it's not entirely his fault.

I'm not a fan of his but the guy can be funny and he is a showman and I don't think he was as good as he could have been that night, and it's not entirely his fault.

Pretty much what I expected. But why wasn't American Hustle nominated for Hair and Makeup?! That comb over is gorgeous.

That snub pretty much says, the hair was over the top and "American Hustle" was that in it's style and fashion, over the top.

No surprises this year at all. Hugh and Jake for "Prisoners" is the big snub for me.

American Hustle was.....yawn......so boring for a 2 hour plus film. It's a **1/2 out of **** at best. No surprise it got 10 nominations when 4 of those are for acting. Bradley Cooper was far superior in "The Place Beyond The Pines" than "American Hustle", that should've been his nomination.
BIG SNUB- Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal for Prisoners.
However, everyone in the Best Actor category was great. All of them.
Glad to see Nebraska, my pick for best film of 2013 so far, got a lot of

This year's Oscar is turning out to be pretty exciting. I don't know who to cheer for because loads of my favorite actors and actresses are nominated although I hope Gravity would win Best Picture.

So Jonah Hill gets nominated...

...but no nominations for Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhall, Daniel Bruhl and Juaqiun Phoenix?
Nice job, Academy. Nice job.
He was good is Wolf of Wall Street but nowhere near as good as these four actors in their respective roles!

Yeah, Jonah Hill was good in Wolf of Wall Street but I don't think it was a big stretch of his abilities actin-wise. Daniel Bruhl, Hugh Jackman and Joaquin Phoenix all do deserve to be up there. A little iffy on Jake Gyllenhaal but he was still good.

Jonah Hill wouldnt be competing with Jackman or Phoenix who would be up for the lead role.

Yes, I now Jackman and Phoenix would have been up for leading noms, I'm just talking about the academy's recognition towards these actors.

BTW, I just remembered they also left out Robert Redford!

Man of Steel not getting VFX nomination, Stoker completely snubbed...

Here are all my problems with these nominations:

- Man of Steel doesn't get nominated for VFX, but Iron Man 3 does
- Stoker doesn't get a single nomination, even though it had my pick for the best cinematography of the year, Nicole Kidman's performance was outstanding, Mia Wasikowska was amazing, and I thought the sound editing was great (though maybe not up to the standard these nominations have)
- Tom Hanks not getting nominated for Captain Philips... what the hell?
- Monsters

- Monsters University not being nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, but Despicable Me 2 being considered?
- Spike Jonze not being nominated for Best Director
...I'm sure there are even more issues I have that I forgot about. But this may just be the worst nominations list I've seen in a long time.

I agree that Stoker was a great movie (my favorite of the year, actually), but I'm not surprised it received no nominations. It was released in March, and barely anyone saw it. Too bad, but that's how it goes with the Oscars. Ah, well.

Blue is the Warmest Color was ineligible for Best Foreign Film. Something about its French release date missing the cut off, I think. Either way, it's stupid, and should totally be nominated.

Great list, good year for movies.

The nomination for Streep for 'Osage County' is so redundant. We don't need to nominate Meryl Streep for every single role she plays.

did you see "August Osage County"? i wanna say the same thing but she seems to get better with each role. She truly is one of the greatest screen actresses of all time. I actually blame Hollywood for not creative strong enough lead female characters for actresses to play. I dont think Amy Adams or Cate Blanchette did enough in their roles for a nomination, but theres really no one else.

I wouldve liked to see Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks) nominated and Julie Deply (Before Midnight), and

Noweheredan, Delpy would've been great. She and Hawke carried that film, but it's not a flashy enough performance for them to recognize.

American Hustle

I agree with elder predator... I have no idea why this movie is getting so much attention and praise. the movie is just not that good. It is russel's attempt to do a satire drama like boogie nights but just doesn't work nearly as well. the best part of the movie is Louis ck's few small scenes; when a minor character is the best part of your movie it does not bode well

199% agree with you! The media and top critics call "American Hustle" a "crowd pleaser". Not with the sold out audience I saw it with or the people I work with in the film business. The words I keep hearing from people and it was the first thing that I thought of after seeing this film was, "What a mess!" It had so much potential to be great, but ended up being over the top, boring, and not interesting enough for a 2 hour plus con/hustle film.
Plus seeing this film ripping off The Big

Plus seeing this film ripping off The Big Lebowski, Jackie Brown, The Sting, Boogie Nights, Saturday Night Fever, The Royal Tenenbaums, Goodfellas, Casino. Movies I would much rather be watching than "American Hustle".

No real arguments with any of these nominations, though I would say Joaquin Phoenix more than deserves to be nominated for Best Actor for Her, and I'm a little disappointed Tom Hanks didn't get a nod but that's not too big a deal for me. The Golden Globes this year were interesting with the awards spread around and I hope everyone gets a slice come the Academy Awards. I'm very glad Star Trek Into Darkness got a nomination for Best Visual Effects, but I'm pretty sure Gravity is going to take it

I'm very glad Star Trek Into Darkness got a nomination for Best Visual Effects, but I'm pretty sure Gravity is going to take it because of how integral the effects work was to telling the story and the sheer impressiveness of how convincing its outer space setting was. Hoping Lupita Nyong'o takes Best Supporting actress, and kudos to Sandra Bullock for getting nominated for Best Actress! Don't think she'll take it but glad that performance, and Gravity in general, has gotten such recognition.

Can't argue with most of these; especially good seeing Fassbender finally getting recognition by the academy. Also sort of surprised that Jonze and Phoenix didn't get directing or acting for HER, although they'll probably give Jonze the Oscar for writing to try and make up for it. A bit puzzling to me that Jackman and Gyllenhaal got nothing for PRISONERS, but Jonah Hill is in there again for WOLF. At least they threw Deakins a bone again. And it's kind of ironic/funny to me that Barkhad Abdi

Yeah Prisoners got unfairly swept under the rug, that's for sure. Reminds me of Warrior a few years back--had all sorts of buzz before it came out, then no one saw it and no one cared. And I swear they keep nominating Deakins just so they can keep giving the award to lesser cinematographers instead... I'm still bitter about him not winning last year!

How Edgar Wright movies keep missing out on Editing & Sound Design, I'll never know...

But one of the funniest things I've seen so far on Twitter is "Llewyn Davis getting no recognition is at least faithful to the story".

It's seems like this film and The Silver Linings Playbook were both films that were forced by outside forces (media, Hollywood studios, top critics) as the "everyone will love this movie, no matter what". The audience I was with didn't feel that way. They're calling it the "crowd pleasing film" which goes without going out and asking audiences what they really thought. American Hustle is not a bad film, it's just a storytelling mess!

Surprised at the level of attention Nebraska received--glad I'm seeing it tonight. Adele Exarchopoulos should have been nominated for Blue is the Warmest Color as Best Actress, though. I'm also surprised that Phoenix and Jonze weren't nominated for Her. Oh, well. As long as Cate Blanchett and Lupita Nyong'o win in their respective categories, I'll be pleased.

EDIT: Why Adapted Screenplay for Before Midnight? Is it just that it's a sequel? That seems really bizarre to me.

Yeah, I think anytime the screenplay is based on characters that existed in previous mediums (novel/film/TV), it has to fall under "adapted." No idea what the parameters are, though.

Regardless, you're right about Phoenix and Jonze for HER.

Double-Oh-Zero is right. Sequels are ALWAYS considered to have adapted screenplays. BEFORE SUNRISE was nominated in the same category.

BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR will be elegible next year.

How odd, I didn't know that! Regarding Blue is the Warmest Color, Adele Exarchopoulos should have been eligible this year, despite the film's ineligibility for Best Foreign Film (and will it actually be eligible for that category next year, since it was released in 2013?). She definitely should have been nominated, her performance was utterly astounding.

The elegibility has to do with when they sent the movie to the Academy. So they haven't seen it yet. Which means that it'll be elegible in ALL categories next year. This isn't like what happened with CITY OF GOD.
