Core pushed back

10.02.2002

Earth has a deadline. And so did the visual effects team working on THE CORE. But with the new requests by Paramount execs, the filmmakers couldn't meet the film's planned November 1st release and as a result the film has been pushed back to a "first quarter" 2003 date. The studio was apparently very happy with certain sequences in the film, specifically ones where entire towns were destroyed by the cataclysmic events that occur when the Earth's core stops spinning. (Strange considering how frightened the same studio was about one scene in THE SUM OF ALL FEARS where Baltimore was obliterated by a nuclear bomb...) The budget has since been increased to allow those scenes to be expanded as well as touch-ups to the scenes where the NASA crew bores to the middle of the earth. Paramount head Rob Friedman said "we always knew we were on a tight post-production schedule," adding "It's important to us to make the best film possible, not a release date." THE CORE stars Hilary Swank, Aaron Eckhart and Stanley Tucci.
