Alamo casting news

10.03.2002

Now that all the behind-the-scenes nonsense regarding THE ALAMO is behind them, producers and Disney are focusing now on casting the film. They are still aiming for the trio of Russell Crowe, Ethan Hawke and Billy Bob Thornton to star, even though there was some concern they would drop once director Ron Howard departed (THE ROOKIE's John Lee Hancock has since taken over directorial duties). So far Thornton is the only one in serious talks as negotiations have just begun to have him star as the legendary Davy Crockett. Ethan Hawke is expected to be formally approached with the role of William Travis within the next week. Crowe is less likely to rejoin although the actor does have a break in his schedule due to the shift of TRIPOLI's start date to early-2004. But the actor could decide to follow his BEAUTIFUL MIND director Howard onto his next project instead of sticking with THE ALAMO. Disney already seems to have a replacement in mind, should Crowe book, in Viggo Mortensen (LORD OF THE RINGS). Hancock is currently polishing the script (written and rewritten by John Sayles and Stephen Gaghan respectively) and once the cast is set production will begin in Texas.

My fake ALAMO poster is woefully out-of-date now...
