A director is found for the Percy Jackson sequel we're not sure anyone wants

Jun. 17, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Fox once had hopes that PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF could serve as a new HARRY POTTER of sorts for their studio; the heir apparent to the mega-franchise that was winding down at Warner Bros. But the film, like POTTER adapted from a popular fantasy book series, never really gained much traction at the box-office ($88 million in the US). But Fox isn't giving up hope and has hired Thor Freudenthal (DIARY OF A WIMPY KID) to direct a sequel.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are currently writing a draft based on the second book in the series, "The Sea of Monsters." But with a director and a script in the works, Fox cautions that the film hasn't been greenlit and they haven't even exercised their option on star Logan Lerman.

While PERCY never caught on in the US, it did make over $135 million internationally, which could be enough to justify a sequel. But will fans be turned off by the tepid first film or be excited to see where the latest sequel goes?

Huh.

Sequel to the Lightning Thief being directed by a guy called Thor? How's that for irony?

This movie had a great supporting cast with Bean, Bronson, Dawson, Coogan and others as Greek gods and such. If we see more of them I'd be up for a sequel. This was better than Clash of the Titans, and thats getting one.

I loved the books. The first movie wasn't perfect by any means, but I'm willing to give it another chance.

The kid that plays Percy is annoying. He reminds me of Hayden Christensen in Attack of the Clones.

Honestly, the first one surprised me. It was better than it looked. Not saying it was great but I came out at the end of watching it thinking this has potential to be something cool. It could also be that I really enjoy Greek mythology but I also enjoyed Clash of the Titans so take everything I say with a pinch of salt.

I'm a fan of the books, and looking forward to the Sea of Monster.

I saw the first one recently. I didn't think it was bad, just so so. If the trailer looks good I might see it.

Nice concept that could be quite epic if done right (although Percy/Perseus come on, that stinks!), The main kid was annoying, Coogan as Hades was just terrible casting and the whole film felt a bit rushed. Still, like I say, until a God Of War movie appears, I will get my dose of mythology elsewhere.

The first movie was okay; nothing special. If it means more Alexandra Daddario though, I'm all for it.

Wow....this movie sucked. The only highlight of the entire movie was Rosario Dawson. That's sadly it.

why not

my brothers who read the books liked the movie. And i didnt think Chris Columbus tried with the last movie. It would be a descent popcorn flick with the right director.

Well..

I read all of the books and they are phenomenal books, for me they are way better the Potter books because they are not drawn out books..a lot of action on every page! The first movie was such a letdown! But the second book is the weirdest one to me and I would like to see it made!
