A few details on the third Riddick flick

02.16.2010

For years we've heard rumblings that smooth-headed night-visioned intergalactic badass Riddick would return for a third adventure (not counting his animated DVD and excellent videogame exploits), and now it's officially becoming a reality.

But while PITCH BLACK kept things grounded and CHRONICLES blew things out to bombastic levels, where will RIDDICK 3 land? A recent THR article, discussing how Russia thinks the property is hotter than the bright side of Crematoria, gives a few bites of the general direction star Vin Diesel and director David Twohy are going.

The new RIDDICK is described as a "back-to-basics approach to the character", and "the script features the character -- the most wanted man in the galaxy -- left for dead on a barren alien planet, dealing with 'trisons' (three-legged bisons) and 'mud demons.' He must then contend with two squads of bounty hunters, one of which ride rockets called jetcycles."

Sounds like it could end up straddling the line between the blade-and-teacup-wielding space bastard's past two flicks. With luck, they'll also find a way to bring back Nick Chinlund's gruff mercenary Toombs.

Extra Tidbit: I will shamelessly admit to loving CHRONICLES complete with its hokey mythology, pretentious speechifying and baroque-pulp tone. It's like a really expensive variation of the 1980 FLASH GORDON. I'm not alone, am I?

.....and one more thing!

There's a strong Riddick fan base too so I hope Diesel produces again with that in mind. Down with Tinseltown!

Sooner than later?!

I tell you what a Riddick freak I am...I am actually listening to the COR soundtrack as I type. Yes there is much more for this character to explore who is simply badass for our time in the mold of your Snake Plisken's, Mad Max's, Terminator's. The DVD does COR much more justice than the theater version although still a bit cheesy. Pitch Black rocked and was so underrated. Diesel is good and will get better with age. I'm diggin the concept for the 3rd and to have Chinlund back is a must. Just

I'M WITH YOU!

Pitch Black was probably among the best sci-fi thrillers since Aliens. Chronicles was a little overindulgent, but it was still very watchable with some great action set pieces. After Twohy did such a kick butt job with Perfect Getaway, I am very game for this sequel.

Twohy is a great second tier director. P.G. was one of my favs last year that slipped through the cracks. Olyphant rocked hard! It'd be cool to see Olyphant as an advesary to Riddick in the next one. Would redeem him for Die Hard 4.

I though Chronicles was amazing. In trying for something grand they made one of the most watchable and entertaining action flicks in the past 10 years...

Pitch Black was awesome!

Chronicles was pretty damn fantastic, but perhaps it just aimed too high...particularly coming from Pitch Black.

Looking forward to the third one, this is Vin Diesel's iconic role so I hope they create something superb!

yeah, not as good as Pitch Black, but Chronicles is definitely underrated.

You're not alone Dave...

It's one of those guilty pleasures that you just can't have enough of...

Actually the whole movies-games-anime pack is one hell of a ride!

Only gripe

With Chronicles is that they had him without the goggles too much. I mean it's like they completely forgot that he needs those things on or everything is too bright. Probably Vin wanting to show more of his face or something.

Chronicles is one of my favourite big, dumb movies. Stupid epic is a good genre to work with I think.
I'm definitely on board for more Riddick films, as long as they manage to at least link it in with the end of Chronicles. Bringing back Chinlund's Toombs would be an excellent idea too - a genuinely entertaining character.

It's like Dino De Laurentis did it...

I too feel like it has that same flare as 80's Flash Gordon. It's an over-wrought gaudy film, but it's fun to watch.

You're not alone. After I played Escape From Butcher Bay, I became hooked on the franchise and I bought the trilogy pack (the one with Pitch Black and Chronicles and the anime movie) and I think they were all excellent and Riddick is one of the coolest and most badass characters ever created. And the universe created for the franchise is fucking awesome too.

Doesn't sound like a sequel

He inherited a massive army at the end of Chronicles. How does he suddenly become a wanted fugitive surviving on his own again? Are we to believe that after Chronicles he simply says "Fuck this, I have more fun being chased by space hobos. This emofag army can find itself another leader"?

well who knows.... look at how God of War, if you are familiar, sequels turned out.

but this would be cool as a prequel.... but then we would have to ditch his awesome eyes since a prequel would have to predate the events of butcher bay and dark athena.

Either way you look at it there's still the MAJOR problem that Riddick inherited that entire army of underverse soldiers. They can't simply drop that or blow it off in passing. "Hey, Riddck. Remember last year when you gained total control over the Underverse followers?" "Yeah" "What-ever happened to that." "Oh, you know how it is; it's fun for the first week but then everyone's asking you where to go, who to conquer, etc. Eventually you just wait for everyone to fall asleep then slip

"So, we should just act like a galaxy conquering, evil, Hell like spirit world doesn't exist?" "That's what I'm doing."

"Hey, Riddick?" "Yeah?" "What ever happened to those cool blue powers you had last year?" "Shhh, you'll break continuity!" "Oh, ya... sorry..."

You are not alone. I love the character of Riddick. He is a great concept, and I can't wait to see this new movie.

I wasn't looking forward to this originally, but that plot actually sounds like it could be a ton of fun.

Pitch Black. Fun Awesomeness. Chronicles. A painful bore. Right now they're on the fence with me so this Twohy character better deliver. I can understand Chronicles as being a guilty pleasure fair enough. It's about the equivalent of Battlefield earth for me tho...Then again my guilty pleasure flick is the Big Hit so what the hell do I know...

Awesome

I can admit that Chronicles is in some ways a horrible movie, but when I watch it, it brings me back to the days when I was young and would watch surf ninjas over and over again. I know there are 10 year old kids who think this is the greatest movie ever and i wouldn't argue with them.
