A live-action version of Mulan is in the works at Disney

03.30.2015

So can we just assume that every Disney animated film is going to get the live-action treatment now? The Hollywood Reporter brought us the news that Disney is developing a live-action version of their 1998 animated film MULAN, having bought a script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek.

The animated film's synopsis:

To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China's greatest heroines in the process.

Disney have been bringing quite a few of their animated classics into the live-action world as of late; CINDERELLA made quite the impression at the box-office and with critics alike, we've also got Bill Condon's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Jon Favreau's THE JUNGLE BOOK,Tim Burton's DUMBO, as well as a sequel to ALICE IN WONDERLAND on the way. The production is in its earliest stages obviously so it's likely to be a bit of time before we get news of who will be directing/starring in the film. If the character weren't so young I'd say get original Mulan voice-actress Ming-Na Wen back for the role. No word on which Disney film is up for the live-action treatment next, perhaps BAMBI? Wink.

Several weeks ago our own Alex Maidy put forward MULAN as a Disney film worthy of a remake. How could he know that would happen? Is he a witch? Definitely. He once turned me into a newt*.

Who would you like to see take on the title role?

*I got better.

Mulan is good choice.

Mulan is the only disney female that pushes gender equality and doesn't get to have things handed down to her by a fairy. I don't see this movie appealing to a large audience, given the violence and all asian cast. Disney will most likely add cgi dragons and a few white people that everyone confuses to be asian (Keanu Reeves, Kristen Kruek)

Mulan Casting: Claudia Kim(Marco Polo), Jamie Chung (Once Upon A Time), Bingbing Fan (X-men). Pretty much names few people know. But it's disney so

redundant, anyone ?

Mulan, like Pocahontas, already had more than a few live adaptation. So I don't really see the point aside from a business point of view, obviously...
What Disney animated film would I like to see in live version ?
A Black Cauldron or a Lilo And Stitch, maybe ?!
(obviously heavy CGI-sed) Lady And The Tramp, The Rescuers or The Lion King might be interesting challenges to make (as in 'good movies'), though...

Zero interest

So many other great options. Who cares about Mulan?

This is not as safe a move as people would think. There is a ton of cultural sensitivity that has to be taken into considerations.

Still, I would really welcome this. Mulan is easily the most empowering disney princess. I'm just curious if they will keep the music. Not likely as it not based on the stage production like a beauty and the Beast will be.

There's was a live action Chinese version a few years ago, so I guess this would look like a cross between that and the animated version.
It's funny that in the 90's/early 2000's, Disney business plan was to capitalize on their famous movies with cheaply made direct-to-video sequels. Now it's changed from capitalizing on those films with live action remakes. I'm not really against the idea, but none of the one's I've seen have been that great (haven't seen Cinderella yet).

The articles title made me laugh and feel sad at the same time!

One would excpect an Aladdin or Little Mermaid would be the more obvious choices, but we are getting Dumbo and Mulan first...

They might consider it to early, as far as recent iconic characters go, for a live version.
