A look at young Mike and Sully from Monsters University

Aug. 22, 2011by:

Pixar sequels are a tricky game, and so far the company has been reluctant to try them for more than a few films. They had huge success with TOY STORY 2 and 3, but their latest CARS attempt earned them their first "bad" film in history.

What will MONSTERS UNIVERSITY bring then? The original is fantastic, but will a prequel have the same sort of magic? All we'd seen so far from the film was a plot synopsis, but now from D23 comes a few character redesigns (via FirstShowing).

Below you can see the updates to the titular Mike and Sully. They're a bit less bulky than in their later years, and Mike's rocking one mean retainer. Check out the pics with the full plot after that.

“Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.”

The original is great. I expect this film to have the same quality as the 'Toy Story' sequels.

I'm glad they only made subtle changes to the characters. The younger versions appear more vivid in colour too which I didn't notice the first time seeing these photos.
I just don't get why Pixar didn't get on this prequel sooner instead of making a sequel to their only not-so-great movie (Cars... if there was any doubt).

Redesign is such a big word. Models look almost exactly the same.

Why are they doing this... can they just stop please? The models are almost the exact same only look slightly crappier. The movie sounds pointless.

Nice

Wasn't the biggest fan of Cars. Now Monsters Inc and The Incredibles were a blast. And yes, next sequel Pixar should make is The Incredibles. I mean, Samuel L Jackson needs the work, right?

Can't Wait!!!

Monsters, Inc is probably the most underrated Pixar flick, so funny, so enjoyable and great voice work. Glad to see the team coming back for a prequel which should just be good ol' fun.
