A rival 20,000 Leagues project gearing up from Fox and Timur Bekmambetov?

May. 17, 2010by: Paul Tassi

What the…? I just reported yesterday that David Fincher was in talks to take over Disney's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA adaptation from McG, and today via Heat Vision, we have word that Fox is planning a rival 20,000 LEAGUES project with their own team.

The film is through Ridley and Tony’s Scott Free productions, and is working with a script from CLASH OF THE TITANS’ Travis Beacham. Fox is reportedly in talks with “he’s so hot right now” Russian action director Timur Bekmambetov of WANTED and NIGHT WATCH fame to direct.

This version follows the plot of Jules Verne novel, but is said to be set in the future. It’s hard to tell which version, this or Disney’s, is closer to a reality right now.

I would say that a Scott Free production with Bekmambetov at the helm would be able to rival a Fincher project with Disney, but the fact that a CLASH OF THE TITANS screenwriter is penning the tale would have me give the clear advantage to Fincher/Mouse House.

Which project would you rather see?

Extra Tidbit: I didn't realize hundred and forty year-old books were such a hot commodity these days.

The problem with rival projects is that in the end both movies normally suck! See "deep Impact" vs. "Armageddon" or "Coco Chanel" vs "Chanel & Stravinsky" etc...Still I would like to see both movies. Because you really can't screw up a movie like this. Giant Squid FTW!

Timur Sucks!!!

He's not a good director- all flash, no bang. Like a retarded Michael Bay, and since Bay already is one of the stupidest directors around, that is really saying something!

Bring on Fincher any day of the week.

SURPRISINGLY DISNEY

They lost me with set in the future and I'm interested to see what Fincher does with it.

Are you kidding?

I read David Fincher and 20,000 Leagues in the same sentence and immediately peed myself.

BTW Any news on that live action Heavy Metal movie?

I now completely support both films being made.

How interesting would that be? The same classic story being told by two very different filmmakers. I would love to see how they differ, how one filmmaker can evoke a certain specific emotion with something while another brings a completely different emotional response to the same thing.

Fincher hands down. Wanted was a terrible movie and I don't want that shit. Why would FOX even try doing a 20,000 movie when they knew Disney has been trying to get one started?

Personally I don't think I care about either project. Fincher's talents would be put to better use elsewhere and Bekmambetov's movies all look exactly the same. It's just a lame ploy to show giant squids in 3D. Obviously Fincher gets the edge but that's just in the sense that I would be less likely to change the channel when I see his version on TNT in five years.

I think both films will be greatly different from the other. I haven't really seen Fincher handle action on a larger scale before and being with Disney it'll definitely be more kid-friendly--that's not a bad thing by any means--but I could see it following in the footsteps of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Win/win

Doesn't matter which one gets made- both would be great.

Because when Poseidon Adventure got two competing versions that turned out so well.

This is a no-brainer, Fincher's version would get my full support. Not that I don't like Timur, but I do think Fincher's film has better chances of actually being really good. The fact Fox's version will be written by Beacham only supports that theory.
