A Sallah-free Indy?

04.17.2007
I guess when Sallah rode off into the sunset at the end of INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, it really was the end for him and Marcus Brody (Hank Jones, Sr. is still deciding).

According to Dark Horizons, burly booming-voiced actor John Rhys-Davies has not been asked to return to the franchise, currently prepping for a fourth adventure (INDIANA JONES AND THE CITY OF THE GODS?). The speculation is that Dr. Jones' Arab excavator chum wasn't included in the script in favor of "a younger cast", even though Harrison Ford is eligible for Social Security.

Then again, Shia LaBeouf was plenty coy about his involvement before the official casting announcement (which juuust so happened to coincide with the release of DISTURBIA, exec produced by Steven Spielberg), so perhaps Rhys-Davies is just being purposely cagey until papers are signed and releases are pressed. In the meantime, the LORD OF THE RINGS survivor will keep himself occupied by making approximately 17 direct-to-DVD movies per year.
Extra Tidbit: Rhys-Davies played Marvel villain Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, on the made-for-TV movie THE TRIAL OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK, and voiced Thor on animated HULK and FANTASTIC FOUR series.

You forgot something...

He'll also be passing the time with between three and seven video games released per year that will all be starring him.

Where's the Sallah love?!

Come on!
The guy saved Indy from eating that poisoned date in Raiders!
Where'd Indy be if not for Sallah?
Wearing those robes in 150 degree weather and STILL maintaining a jovial personality?!
If it were me, Indy would still be at the hotel in Cairo while went out and bought some friggin' sleeveless t-shirts.

"I am the Monarch of the sea!"

That's really a shame... Sallah was pretty fucking awesome. Though it's definately more tragic with Denholm's passing... Marcus and Indy always had such awesome chemistry (as did Sallah, don't get me wrong). With this "younger cast" thing it's sounding like they may be embracing Indy's old age a little more then we previously thought. Perhaps with Indy as the grizzled old man out of place in the new world (the post-nazi villain world)

casting younger people is fine...but you gotta keep the classic characters for the fanboys and the people who originally saw the series....those who ARE harrison ford's age.

gotta have sallah.

I forget, do we know where this latest installment is taking place?

After all, there already is an Indiana Jones movie without Sallah, so unless it's in Arabia, I'm not yet saddened by the news. I don't like the younger cast idea, although Henry Sr. isn't necessary to make it good. I'm just kinda sad Denholm Elliot passed away in '92, in general as well as specifically because of what he brought to the movies.

He was my favorite character...

I was overlooking everything because I thought he would be in it at least.

I am sad. SAD!
